House Panel Advances Bill Stripping Obama’s Power on Keystone XL(*Update)

House committee approved a Republican-backed bill requiring the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to approve TransCanada Corp.’s proposed Keystone XL pipeline, stripping power from President Barack Obama.

The Energy and Commerce Committee voted 33-20 today for the legislation, which would give FERC the authority to approve the $7 billion project within 30 days, provided the project is deemed safe. The Senate isn’t considered a similar measure.

Republicans want to begin work on the 1,661 mile (2,673 kilometer) oil pipeline from Alberta, Canada, to the U.S. Gulf Coast. Obama in November delayed work to consider an alternate route. The House panel plans to add the bill to a measure on energy and infrastructure, with a vote planned this month.

“The president left us no choice” because the review of pushes a final decision until after the presidential election, Representative Lee Terry, a Nebraska Republican and the bill’s sponsor, said at today’s meeting.

House appropriator plans to attach other measures to payroll tax bill

Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) does not want to let the opportunity provided by the payroll tax extension go to waste saying, “when a train is leaving the station in this town, you do tend to try to put as much freight on it as possible.”

Appearing on MSNBC’s Martin Bashir program, Kingston suggested that some controversial provisions might be added to the payroll tax extension, including the Keystone pipeline, the construction of which President Obama rejected.

“Its possible that the Keystone pipeline or some of these other energy issues that relate to jobs may be included,” Kingston said.

House Republicans passed a two-month extension of the payroll tax cut in December after an extended fight with the White House, Democrats and the Senate over the length of the proposal. That extension is scheduled to expire at the end of February.

Not to mention, do they really believe Obama is going to sign it into law?

Yet another round of mental masturbation by the Republican House.

1. The article was light on information.
2. There were numerous errors in the grammar that made the article difficult to understand.

...because there wasn't enough time to do an adequate survey to determine that very fact iirc...Besides which, because this is a pipeline between two countries so Sec of State STILL has to sign off on it, with Presidential approval.

As much as the dirty little oil-whores in the gop scream about this, there really is very little they can do to force it to happen...
