In a story of political redemption, Mark Sanford is headed back to Congress after his career was derailed by scandal four years ago.
I am one imperfect man saved by Gods grace, the Republican told about 100 cheering supporters Tuesday after defeating Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch to win back the 1st District seat he held for three terms in the 1990s. Its my pledge to all of you going forward Im going to be one of the best congressmen I could have ever been.
Although the race was thought to be close going into the voting, Sanford collected 54 percent of the vote against Colbert Busch, the sister of political satirist Stephen Colbert, in a district that hasnt elected a Democratic congressman in more than three decades. About 32 percent of the districts voters went to the polls. Green Party candidate Eugene Platt finished far behind.

(16,993 posts)If they discover he's stealing from them again. They knew what he was when they voted for him. They deserve whatever they get from the man. I do feel bad for those who knew better, and will have to endure his "representation."

(63,912 posts)It was just demoralizing that this guy could get back in office after pulling the stunts he pulled. You'd think the voters would CARE that he cheated them financially, even if they don't care about his infidelity.
And I don't understand how women could vote for the guy. Chalk it up; to blind ideology, I guess. Maybe I was just expecting too much from the women down there. I'm glad I don't know any of them and I don't live there. I don't even want to travel there (ugh, and my granddaughter is considering applying to a college in that area...).

(42,770 posts)My niece is selecting soon and I begged her not to go to one of her choices. Won't mention the school so as not to offend anyone here that might live there. Then, I realized I would probably not have listened to my aunt at her age either.
Whenever I think about Sanford with disgust, I wonder if I feel the same as many on the other side did toward Bill. But just disappearing without word as governor kind of puts him in a different class.
What I really worry about is our GOTV and I still wonder if we have the right person running our party.

(63,912 posts)that won't be up to me. She lives in a Boston suburb and doesn't want to go to college below Boston. So that means Del, Md. and the Carolinas (she doesn't like FL).
Her major is either Environmental Science or Marine Biology. A coastal city's college is important.

(63,912 posts)IOW, she doesn't want any weather colder than where she is right now. She had considered LA where her aunt lives but decided it was too far from her family in MA.
I guess either the Dems didn't show up, or that there weren't enough of them to matter.
I wonder where he will disappear to this time.

(972 posts)I don't know the breakdown, but I would suspect that Dems voted in proportionately larger numbers than the Repubs. Just not that many Dems in SC, especially the 1st District (basically Charleston and the barrier islands.)
First votes in appeared to be from downtown Charleston, which is a majority Black area. Busch led 54% to 46% early on. Then the outlying areas started reporting, i.e., Kiawah Island, Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms - all VERY wealthy areas. Sanford at 50% to Busch's 49% with the Green candidate at 1%. Finally, as the rural areas started reporting Sanford's lead increased to 54% where it stayed for the rest of the evening.
I was physically ill watching the results. Had to go to bed before the end of NCIS....

(30,676 posts)you're better off not knowing the end. they'll reprise at the beginning of next episode,
I knew it was over when someone pointed out the ballot error which listed Colbert twice. That sort of shenannigans is not just to fool the voters, but to give Republican elected officials an opportunity to game the election results.

(63,912 posts)If that mistress dumps him and goes back to Argentina he may go after her. Then the folks who voted him in had better be happy with it.
Oh, well, at least his election didn't INCREASE the number of republicans in House. I try to comfort myself with that.

(30,676 posts)orgies in the governor's mansion at least. Something utterly unforgivable an unforgettable.
Then when they re-elect him we'll know the voters really learned their lesson.

(2,560 posts)If he got 54%, then Colbert-Bush must have had 46% (probably less but it's that order of magnitude). So, that's an 8-point gap. That's actually a pretty big margin. Did something change in the last few days?
