I don't answer phone calls from any 800 numbers because they are usually spam or junk calls. But I do look up the number to see who called. We got a call yesterday and today from an 855 number, and when I looked it up, it turns out it is the TEA party calling. Stupid robo calls, I can only hope that it costs them $$ to call. Totally unwanted. I want to say so much to them, including some not so nice language.

(21,716 posts)There are others that have posted what the call was about, not that I have seen on DU, but I'm sure in different states. I always look up toll free numbers before I will think about answering them. After I look them up, I have no desire to answer them at all.

(34,136 posts)And from Rep. Steve Southerland (FL - Tea Party), who is unfortunately my representative.
The FFC robocalls are particularly annoying since they will not disconnect when I try to hang up on them. They take control of my telephone line and will not relinquish it until their message is complete. I've now placed complaints with the FCC, FTC, and the Florida Consumer Affairs people. I know they cannot block calls from some organizations, but my major complaint is the inability to disconnect their calls, especially since their message is over a minute long.
Oh, the other complaint about the FFC is that the calls purport to be from the Florida branch but there is no web site or contact information for a Florida branch. The link from the national site is for a dead webspace. So I can't even contact them to get OFF their list.
ETA - I did call Rep. Southerland's office to complain about being on his call list. The only reason they would have my number is from when I called his office to complain about some of his insane votes. Either that or his telephone "town halls" are dialing everyone in his district until they get enough people to stay on the line to listen to his bullcrap.

(34,136 posts)I tend to pick up my phone even if I don't recognize the numbers. We have friends and family who change cell phone numbers irregularly and my parents have been in out out of hospitals so I don't want to miss any calls. Plus this is my business line and any call could pertain to that.
I like messing with telemarketers' minds, so it can be a source of amusement. Recently I've found that the "Microsoft Security Services" guys from India have no sense of humor and hate being laughed at, so when they call I just laugh at them until they hang up. They get really irate, which just makes me laugh harder.
The Florida Consumer Complaint people were ready to shrug off the FFC calls except for the robocalls and especially because they took control of my line. If I had had an emergency, I would not have been able to call out until their lengthy message was over.

I usually respond telling them they're assholes and if they want to waste their time sending me bullshit
I'll send it back.

(1,016 posts)They send their newsletter with a prepaid envelope, where they want donation and also ask to use a stamp to offset their costs. I mail it without a stamp and add weight to make them pay more for postage. Helps the US Post Office and drains their money.
