could run for governor--the stupid shit (and this goes to his complete lack of judgment) thought that, since he paid for the party, that everyone in politics would step back and say, "Oh, apres vous, Governor Issa!"

Instead, Ahhnuld comes in and (as the tape is titled) "bigfoots" his ass. Ahhnuld, who could afford to spend a million here and a million there, is nonetheless sufficiently astute that he let the car thief spend HIS money...and then he hopped in and took the prize!

Like I said, I don't care much for Ahhnuld at all, but every person, in every life, likely does One Good Thing. I think that causing Darrell the Arsonist to cry like a child, thereby giving so many people in the world a moment of utter hilarity, was Ahhnuld's One Good Thing!

but I applaud him for that one.

I was new to California when all this was taking place, so I wasn't familiar with all the players. I didn't even know who Issa was at the time. There is a certain similarity between the two though. I think they both sought public office to give themselves a certain aura of respectability. For Arnold, evidently marrying a Kennedy just wasn't quite enough. Issa came from humble beginnings, was a high school drop out, and a small time crook, so I imagine he spent a good chunk of his life running from his past. He kind of reminds me of Don Draper in Mad Men, only more ruthless and less attractive.

I wonder if Issa thought that the governorship was a stepping stone to the White House. He certainly has an ego big enough for it.

footsteps, probably (another guy from humble origins).

In the Arab world and parts of southwest Asia, "Issa" or "Isa" is the word for "Jesus" (rather like "Allah" is the word for "God" but some folks think that "those heathens" are talking about a different guy).

http://www.talkdemocrat.com/showthread.php?20650-darrell-issa-car-thief-arsonist-scam-artist-now-in-charge-of-investigating
<snip>
...I wanted to know about the troubles in his past: the gun conviction, the three allegations of car theft, the arson allegation, the allegation that he dismissed an employee while brandishing a gun, and the mysteries about his finances. These are matters he avoids discussing at length with the press, and, as we got into the details, he joked that it might be less painful if I would “just twiddle the toes.”

Issa seemed tired of defending himself from these old stories...

...A few days after we met in Las Vegas, Issa called me. He was concerned about all my questions regarding his early life and didn’t see why they were newsworthy. The conversation was awkward. I told him that there was one more question I wanted him to answer: Where did you get the money for your start in business? The issue had stumped the insurance investigators, and William had, somewhat mysteriously, told me that his brother “would lend people money and get money back that way when he was in the service. He would buy and sell cars sometimes. He would get cars at a very good price, keep them, and sell them.”

There was a pause on the phone. “That’s sort of an amazing one to ask,” Issa said. He took a deep breath, and then carefully and patiently explained that, before he started at Quantum, he sold a BMW motorcycle and two cars—his Mercedes and his wife’s 1967 Volkswagen Bug. “We liquidated everything we could to raise money,” he said. He added that he also borrowed fifty thousand dollars from family members to make the first loan to Adkins. Issa seemed frustrated and exhausted. “Everyone,” he said, “has a past.”

“Fixing Wikipedia is a full-time thing when you’ve got people hacking it, or editing it, in a rather slanted way.”

This guy is total scum, a small-time crook and criminal who now heads perhaps the most important government oversight committee. Unbelievable. My guess is they don't get him removed because, with all of his history, he can probably be contained any time they need to.

Hopefully people will keep his Wikipedia page honest, I'd hate to see him succeed in cleansing his record.

But I was glad to read it.

I've never been a Ryan Lizza fan at all, and felt that he went strangely out of his way on several occasions to present a possible legitimate explanation for some of Issa's claims (such as the blue flame/gas pipe claim to help explain Issa's company going up in flames).

Still, the article covered a lot of ground and Lizza was willing to ask Issa himself about these issues, face to face, which is real journalism rarely seen these days.
