Zach Sobiech, 18, passed away this morning, surrounded by family and friends.
In the past few weeks, donations to Zach's fund to find a cure for children's cancers skyrocketed, as did downloads of his song, "Clouds," which has more than 2.9 million page views on YouTube.
When he was 14, Zach was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer that mostly strikes children. His prognosis wasn't great. Last May, with no more treatment options, he was given a year to live.
Zach began writing music after his cancer was diagnosed. His mom, Laura, was cleaning the family room downstairs last year when she found a folded-up piece of paper. She unfolded it to make sure it wasn't a homework assignment.
"I read through it and then I realized what I was reading," she said.

(27,985 posts)My condolences to his family. His horrifically difficult time is over but not for his family, so may peace come when it can.

(2,888 posts)I sit on that agnostic fence, don't really believe in god or another plane of existence after this one, nor do I really go outta my way to say there isn't one either.
But...in the case of this young man, all I have to say is, I hope beyond hope, there is something greater beyond this, some other ethereal plane of existence, some sort of after-place or rebirth of the dispersed energy that was once our bodies into some kind of great cosmic collective of all the energy that ever was, is, and ever shall be in the universe. A reality of our elegant universe so wondrous and magnificent that we, as a simple scientific fact, cannot comprehend in any way, shape, or form because we simply have not evolved enough to be capable of doing so.
Godspeed lad, may you dream, and pluck your guitar, up, up, up in the clouds...forever.

(2,888 posts)as to what happens next...I think Zach himself said it best, if I can quote to the best of my memory from the end of his "My Last Days" YouTube video:
He only just turned 18 earlier this month...yet had the bravery, I'd have to say, of a thousand people who lived a thousand lifetimes.
