$4 billion-worth of cuts to food stamps?

Senate rejects farm bill amendments aimed at changing cuts to food stamps
By Ramsey Cox - 05/21/13 04:29 PM ET

The Senate rejected two amendments to the farm bill Tuesday that would have changed the $4 billion-worth of cuts to food stamps.

Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) introduced an amendment that would have cut at least an additional $12 billion for the supplemental food assistance program (SNAP), also known as food stamps. His amendment failed on a 40-58 vote.

“My goal is simple to restore integrity to the supplemental food assistance program,” Roberts said ahead of the vote.
The Senate is considering a $955 billion five-year farm bill and amendment votes are expected to continue throughout the week.

S. 954 would cut more than $23 billion from current spending levels over 10 years, including $4 billion-worth of cuts in food stamps, which has led to some Democratic opposition.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) introduced an amendment, which would have restored the $4 billion in cuts to food stamps. Her amendment failed on a 26-70 vote, shortly after Roberts'. Gillibrand said during a recession, Congress should not be cutting food assistance.

are seemingly Protected for the Big $ Ag Biz.....
Only 26 Dems wanted to even so much as offset Benefit Cuts w/cuts to ag subsidies...
At least that's my take on this.
No matter What It seems undeniably Clear, Both Dems and GOP want to Expand the Hunger Crises to Protect the 1%.
Period.
Still want to vote straight Dem in 2014?
Me? Never Again.

"The White House has said it supports the Senate farm bill."

I'm not sure if they have said anything about the SNAP cuts.

understand what's In the Bill how can they say they support it? I, personally (based upon recent events) have No doubt the WH Knows Exactly What's in the Bill.
Imo-PBO has Long supported Austerity in action, not so much with words tho what "they" don't say, while they try Not to say "it"-says it all.

never need "fixing." Nor the War on Drugs. Nor the Wars Without End. Nor the tax giveaways to Apple, GE, Big Oil, Big Pharma, Monsanto and ConAgra. Funny how that works.

credible alternative or the lack there-of Is the Point of having Only a CoE's to choose from. Personally, I don't believe Thats accidental.
Candidates in Both partys's are chosen Long before we "get in the game" and That is part of our problem.
If a potential candidate doesn't "meet muster" with the powers at be? No matter How good you are--you're NOT gonna get party backing.
A friend of mine ran for State Rep and the local State Dem party Completely ignored him-he had No connections, no Money and No fame. He simply wanted to work For the people in his district...and that is no longer "good enough"
We need to change the Dem (or whatever party) Party from with-in if we ever want to be included in the selection process.
