High-level Republican says Asheville was targeted

ASHEVILLE — A high-level Republican acknowledged that the city, and Buncombe County, have been targeted by GOP legislation in a hastily written resignation letter.

Rep. Robert Brawley, R-Mooresville, handed in the letter, along with his gavel, when he resigned as chairman of the powerful House Finance Committee on Wednesday. He will stay on as a lawmaker.

The letter blasted Speaker Thom Tillis, R-Charlotte, for a bill that gives an unnamed GOP lawmaker a “monopoly,” for his ties to Time Warner and for flip-flopping on toll roads.

It also claims that a controversial de-annexation bill Brawley had filed was held up despite controversial bills aimed at Asheville sailing through the House.

“You have controlled (the committee) completely, or your staff has, under the pretense we do not want to create conflicts with towns,” he wrote in the letter. “Yet, we run all over Buncombe County and Asheville as if (the General Assembly) is some kind of hero in the legislature taking care of things.”
