Responding to the Obama-mandated health insurance policies, Catholic leaders throughout America are outraged over what is being perceived by some as a serious assault on their religion. Under Obamas health care plan, Catholic hospitals and universities will be required to offer free birth control to employees. While the law will not include entities with solely religious purposes, such as churches, it will extend to church-affiliated companies that do not exclusively support a religious-minded agenda.
Under the provision put forth last month by the president, health plans provided by Roman Catholic institutions that cover non-Catholics must front the cost of all FDA approved contraceptives, including those that induce abortion. Even if the policy is aimed at only a section of the church, Catholic leaders say Obamas insurance plan is an attempt to take down the church by infiltrating it with God-less ideals on their religion, and according to some, they wont go down without a fight.
Bill Donohue of the Catholic League says the move is a milestone in terms of taking on the Church, and tells CBS News that it is unprecedented in American history
for the federal government to line up against the Roman Catholic Church.
This is going to be fought out with lawsuits, with court decisions and, dare I say it, maybe even in the streets, adds Donohue.

Too bad Catholic leaders throughout American weren't outraged over their priests' assault on boys, but one supposes if they all went to confession, then they're forgiven.
Nothing like a religion where you can murder someone on Saturday night, confess to the boy-raping priest on Sunday morning, and retain you place in God's kingdom.
Catholic leaders need to get over themselves...

I don't know about you guys but I think now that Little Ricky is calling Romney out on the contraceptives in Mass this issue and the"outrage" will start to go away....it's 1000% politically motivated.

(50,453 posts)trying to promulgate outrage in hopes of filling their coffers by 'declaring war on Obama' AND women, they have NEVER declared peace, they have always been 'at war' with the President, the Democrats AND women, imo.
Lay Catholics should be, and probably are, legitimately outraged at the RCC hierarchy for speaking falsely and saying they are speaking for Catholics as a whole.

The Catholic Church has the right to put forth "standards" for other Catholics, sure. But they have no right to force their beliefs on non-Catholics. And even their "standards" are not laws, just "standards"..... and from what I understand, 97% of Catholic women use birth control anyway.
Bill Donohue would do well to remember that the government, of, by, and for the people is US. And also to remember that one of the top reasons that immigrants came to this wonderful country of ours was to get out from under the jackboot heel of tyrannical governments and churches in other countries. One of the reasons our country came into being is because we took on "the church." It's part of who we are. It's not "unprecedented in American history" as he would claim. Quite the contrary. It IS American history.

Not one Catholic hospital, not one Catholic university, not one Catholic church will be "required to offer free birth control to employees." That is absolutely, categorically not true, and as I recall, one of the Big Ten is supposed to address the subject of lying. God's apparently against it.
So, is Donohue lying, totally mistaken, or just a crank who gets an inordinate amount of attention from the popular media for his delusional pronouncements? In any case, the popular media would be serving the public much better by simply ignoring this hateful old man.

(25,183 posts)Catholics don't feel nearly as threatened by the Mormon church as the evangelicals do. In fact, many older Catholics remember the fundie prejudice against JFK, and see the same sack of excrement being hurled at Romney, and they're disgusted by it.
If Romney is the Rethug nominee, he will get a good number of Catholic votes.

Time to take away their tax exempt status - not only has the church become a shadow of it's former self, the crazy fundamentalists and loons have taken over and turned it into a shadowy political group hell bent on dominant control over women.
This whole "Catholic leaders "is highly offensive. Polls show Catholics are not out of main stream America in their use and desire for said coverage. These people are leaders of virtually no one, yet some how the media acts like they are speaking for all Catholics. The media's and certain politicians elevation of these people is more offensive to this said Catholic than a Catholic hospital being forced to follow government regulations like every other hospital. If treating a Catholic hospital like every other one is offensive then these people don't understand offensive.

(24,396 posts)A bunch of bishops and cardinals - all MALE, by the way! - are trying to influence health care for women - a gender that NONE of those bishops or cardinals has ever had sex with, BTW - by denying them contraception which is the best way for women to plan the size of their families - which is something none of these bishops and cardinals have ever had or will ever have, along with never having the responsibility of planning and providing for a family.
In what sense are these bishops and cardinals QUALIFIED to pontificate on an issue of womens health and labor law? Through the make believe they call religion? Their little patriarchal, misogynistic political organization called the RCC?
Fuck them.

There's most likely more regressive thinking that I'm missing.
So now THEY'RE crying foul, when what THEY want to do is a bazillion times worse than a simple health insurance mandate??? Give me a break.
I just heard that the Catholic TV network EWTN (which would have us return to the Dark Ages, if it had its way) is now going to sue the Obama administration over this -- this, from an organization that pleads poverty every time you turn around. I hope they will -- perhaps that will send them into permanent bankruptcy.
I am literally sick to death of the Roman Catholic Church. This "persecution" schtick wore out a long time ago. The only possible good thing I can see coming from this that maybe those Catholics who do use birth control and who do get their prescriptions filled through health insurance (which, I understand, is not an insignificant number) will speak up and tell this antiquated group of old men to shove it.
