http://news.yahoo.com/us-marines-posed-nazi-symbol-afghanistan-185101573.htmlSAN DIEGO (AP) The Marine Corps on Thursday once again did damage control after a photograph surfaced of a sniper team in Afghanistan posing in front of a flag with a logo resembling that of the notorious Nazi SS a special unit that murdered millions of Jews, gypsies and others.
The Corps said in a statement that using the symbol was not acceptable.
However, it was a naive mistake made by Marines who believed the SS symbol was meant to represent sniper scouts and never intended to associate themselves with a racist organization, said Maj. Gabrielle Chapin, a spokeswoman at Camp Pendleton.
The Marines in the image will not be disciplined because investigators determined there was no malicious intent, Chapin said.

(3,238 posts)that they might not have known what that symbol stood for? If no one told them and they didn't know, as far as they were concerned, they may have thought they were just standing in front of the American flag and some weird logo on a flag denoting "sniper scouts?" below it. Most of these guys look like grunts and as such, they basically follow orders. Couldn't an idiot superior officer or nco have set up the shot and just told these Marines to pose for a photo? I want to believe that anyone who knew of the symbols meaning would have protested standing in front of it for a photo, but Marines generally do what they are told or ordered to do.

(4,428 posts)That exact flag is available for purchase on several sites. There is no question in the descriptions accompanying it as to what it is. Example:
"SS Nazi Runes Hausfahne Flags
This was the House Flag of the German Storm troopers or (SS)."
These jokers knew exactly what flag they were posing with.
