Slam Dunk: Dick Durbin smacks down IRS Republican talking points like a Piñata
May 26, 2013

Chris Wallace asked U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin on Fox News Sunday questions regarding the IRS in which Republicans claim to be victim to. Durbin began with Citizens United, then lists a few reasons this occurred, or should occur.
Wallace asked, Question, Senator why single out Crossroads when you did not mention one single liberal group, and there were a bunch that were applying for that exempt-status exactly that point, with the name progress in their names? and at that point, Durbin smacked down Republican talking points like a piñata.
Durbin responded, I can just tell you flat out why I did it, because that Crossroads organization was boasting about the money they were raising as a 501(c)(4).
Lets get back to the basics. Citizens United really unleashed hundreds, if not thousands, of organizations seeking tax-exempt statuses to play in political campaigns. The law we wrote as Congress said that they had to exclusively be engaged in social welfare and not politics and campaigning.
And so, here is the IRS trying to decide whether or not these organizations really comply with the law. Crossroads was exhibit A. They were boastful about how much the money they were going to raise and beat Democrats.

(8,462 posts)Which is it? Anyone know?
Googled my own question and it is "exclusively". So any of these groups that do political work AREN'T eligible.

(42,290 posts)It's never been defined by the IRS. So far the wording stands at "primarily", implying 51%. But nobody's ever challenged that nor has the IRS provided further clarification.

(112 posts)I worked for a charity for 10 years.. We helped women and children come
to our shelter to be safe.. That is a real social welfare/charity 501c4...
Posing, and changing the wording to cheat, and hide is a crime!
I say retro it back expose the donors, and tax the money!
I love they got caught, and hate they broke the law in my opinion..
Claiming to be a social welfare/charity, when in fact you are buying
our politicians is the same as,
claiming to be a pharmacist when your actually a drug dealer!!!
