The faces of war (before, during and ater)

Last edited Tue May 28, 2013, 03:39 PM - Edit history (1)

http://wWhile the emotional repercussions of war aren't easy to measure, the before, during, and after pictures of soldiers who have seen combat tell a pretty unsettling story. There's something mesmerizing about these photographs, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Photographer Lalage Snow has captured something really interesting.

Thank you for making DU aware of this; I would like to see more pictures. Perhaps you will get more responses if the problem is fixed.

I don't know that I can draw any solid conclusions from what I'm seeing. It seems that the "during" pictures were taken with slightly different lighting, which made a lot of the soldiers eyes look sharper, with smaller pupils, than in the "before" and "after" photos. There are definite changes...some of the ones who look more anxious in the "before" pictures look more calm in the "after" pictures, while those that look more naive look a bit more jaded. But it's hard to say from just three photos. I did notice that I would have liked to see one or two women as well.

In any case, it was very interesting and I thank you again for posting it.
