Yuck! The Senate Won't Clear the Way for States to Label Genetically Modified Food/The Nation

"It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is no distinctly native American criminal class except Congress."

"I think I can say, and say with pride, that we have some legislatures that bring in higher prices than any in the world."

"Senator: Person who makes laws in Washington when not doing time."

Mark Twain

http://www.thenation.com/blog/174543/yuck-senate-wont-clear-way-states-label-genetically-modified-food

While sixty-four countries around the world require labeling of foods with genetically engineered ingredients, while the American Public Health Association and the American Nurses Association have passed resolutions supporting this sort of labeling in the United States, the Senate voted 71-27 to keep Americans in the dark.

US Senator Bernie Sanders proposed an amendment to the federal farm bill that would have allowed states to require clear labels on any food or beverage containing ingredients that have been genetically modified. Sanders said, “I believe that when a mother goes to the store and purchases food for her child, she has the right to know what she is feeding her child.”

Fearing lawsuits from multinational biotechnology, agribusiness and food production firms—which also maintain some of the most efficient lobbying teams in Washington—even states with long histories of consumer protection and right-to-know legislation have been cautious about introducing this sort of food labeling. The Sanders amendment addressed that threat, establishing a clear federal policy that states are allowed to require clear labels so that consumers know what they’re eating.

Of the 71 “no” votes, twenty-eight came from Democrats—many of whom fancy themselves consumer advocates and backers of the public’s right to know. The other forty-three “no” votes came Republicans, almost all of who say they want to free up the states to experiment and innovate.

is to keep pressing the issue. Genetically modified foods should be clearly labeled.

Sanders's quote is interesting:

“I believe that when a mother goes to the store and purchases food for her child, she has the right to know what she is feeding her child.”

I agree, but if you buy a bag of corn, it's corn. If you buy tofu, it's soy.

However, our federal government has made it legal to label products as "organic" that are definitely not organic at all. You can buy amber colored corn syrup labeled as honey. And the shit that masquerades as beef in "all beef hot dogs" is a total joke. Talk about not having any idea what you're eating! Don't ever ask a Chinese restaurant what the funky looking gunk is that they use for meat products in their food.

We know that high fructose corn syrup is a health nightmare, but it's everywhere. Whether or not the corn is GMO is completely irrelevant to that fact.

Here's an interesting notion: if food and beverage producers had to put a label saying "contains GMOs" on every food that contained GMOs, how many food would NOT carry that label? Any?

But that is no reason to just not start somewhere, like labeling things with GMOs.

Oh, and I don't buy corn anymore at all - I consider it all to be GMO, because there are no labels. I don't miss it, it is a starchy grain, not a vegetable, and I don't really need it for anything at all.

Why bring HFCS into a thread about GMO labeling? Or any of the other stuff? Besides, I can and do avoid HFCS, it is clearly listed in the ingredients.

It was a bit of a tangent, but quite closely related: 1) HFCS is pretending to be honey in essentially every house brand and many big name honeys -- truth in labeling; 2) HFCS has been proven to be unhealthy in many ways, in stark contrast to GMOs. I find it nearly disingenuous of Sanders to go on about GMO labeling and "a mother needs to know what she's feeding her children" when the labels on so many foods are pure fabrication. I do not oppose GMO labeling, but it's an odd labeling issue to support so strongly.
