Three guesses why the Arctic is changing. First two don't count.

(3,299 posts)I was sitting on the beach on Paradise Island in the Bahamas one
late morning when a pretty small dark cloud blew in off the water.
All of a sudden it dropped a funnel and we had a waterspout!!
Didn't last more than 15 minutes.

(20,776 posts)have never seen a real one, or a waterspout, however did experience a dust devil once in Arizona. It came flying across the parking lot, and picked up a trash can and tossed it in the air, full of garbage. One tough little sucker!!

(20,776 posts)We all know about how destructive they are, especially in the United States, but there is a certain kind of natural beauty and wonder about them as well. Having seen films of them crossing the plains, whipping about and even having vortexes spin off the main part gives a kind of other worldly appearance. I find them just fascinating.

(63,220 posts)No denying that they're literally awesome displays of power, and they do have a certain magnificent beauty when seen from a suitable distance.

(20,776 posts)an Orca pod. You wouldn't want to be in the water with them, but watching them from a boat, they are magnificent.

(29,414 posts)there should be video out there of a rare tornado in Auckland, New Zealand from a couple of years ago.
I'll have to look at this thread this evening.

(20,776 posts)from a distance, some day. Videos give you some idea, but to actually see how huge they are, from a distance, must be mind blowing.

(29,414 posts)In the early 1980s I worked in the summers doing petro-chemical construction jobs. The summer of 1980 I was working for the riggers (the people that operate cranes, forklifts, and so forth) and had a project with another guy to clean up and organize the yard (where they stored all the pipe parts.)
We were at the rear of the yard, away from any cover and surrounded by pallets of valves and other heavy parts. We watched the tall and skinny tornado touch down in the property behind that plant, and immediately shred some little shack or shed. All we could do was watch and hope it didn't come any further toward us. It was moving our way, but it dissipated after only a few (long) minutes.
That's the closest I've ever been to one, and don't want to repeat it!

(20,776 posts)As I said the most I have ever seen was a dust devil in Arizona. I was far enough at the time, a couple of feet, but it skimmed across the ground, and picked up a full trash can and tossed it like a bean bag. I am sure had it come by me, I would have gotten un wanted flying lessons!
kind of like this

I plan on heading back there someday and will have to keep an eye out!

(20,776 posts)You can plug in almost any country and find footage of them. A few exceptions are the North or South Pole.. and maybe some very hot desert areas. I tried Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and found none. Pakistan, yes. Egypt, there were some on the water. It also could be the fact that not many people have phone cams.. but that's hard to believe.
