Impressive. Nine people got shot in Philadelphia between late Friday night and late Saturday night. One fatality (so far) and one arrest. People are just getting lit up in the City of Brotherly Love. Overall, fifteen people have been shot so far this weekend. There was also another shooting on South Street near Society Hill, although no one seems to have been struck. Warm weather really seems to coincide with urban gun violence. I sure would have liked a bill that throws the book at straw purchasers. Background checks are nice, but these guns are flooding the cities and going into the hands of people who did not buy them at a licensed dealer or even a gun show. And the result is just an ongoing slaughter.

(10,749 posts)My spouse and I talk about this all the time. Is it outrage paralysis? Is it the knowledge that our system is broken? No matter the source of the outrage, we seem incapable of dealing with it.
Take a look at the article in the NYT today re health care costs. More important, look at the comments. Thousands of comments, many observing that they are foregoing health care because of the costs. One guy wrote that he paid for health care for his son's birth conditions for 14 years.
We are broken.

(31,893 posts)I'm serious. Make it so that the only handguns that are allowed to be manufactured are those that are ordered by law enforcement agencies and the military.
If a private citizen feels that they need a handgun for personal protection they will need to apply directly to their local law enforcement agency for a permit, and the law enforcement agency (if they agree with the need) will then issue them a handgun which will be permanently numbered and registered. If this handgun ends up being used in the commission of a crime it will be readily traceable to the registered owner.
I don't see any other way to end handgun violence other than completely restricting their manufacture, making all private sales illegal, and making any private ownership strictly controlled.
No more cranking out unlimited numbers of handguns. Manufacturers will only be allowed to make them to order as law enforcement and miitary needs dictate. As long as unlimited numbers of handguns are manufactured and private sales are allowed, there will never be a way to control the flow of handguns into the hands of criminals. Choke off the supply at the source.

(2,088 posts)And knives, cars, air conditioning, pitbulls, Nintendo and breathing causes more death than guns, so we should do things to outlaw them.
Because when you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns. And to stop a bad guy with a gun, you need a good guy with a gun.
Besides, it's only minorities getting shot. . .who cares? Now, when there is a massacre in a rich white area, wake m. . .wait? Newtown, Columbine, Aurora??? Affluent areas? Not rich enough. If it happens in some gated community or on Rodeo Drive, we'll care.
We are killing ourselves and not ONE politician CARES!!!
