There never was a war without sense killing of innocent civilians. In fact, Americans are probably better at limiting the number of incidents than the troops of most other nations. That doesn't mean we accept it; that doesn't mean we don't vigorously see war crimes prosecuted to the full extent of the law. In fact, calling these incidents to light is exactly the very best way to reduce their frequency. But when you send men with guns--and now women with guns--into other people's lands, you have to accept this will happen.

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) — Army Pfc. Bradley Manning dumped hundreds of thousands of sensitive documents on to the Internet and into enemy hands, a prosecutor said Monday at the beginning of a trial for the biggest leak of classified information in U.S. history.

Manning, a 25-year-old former intelligence analyst from Oklahoma, has admitted to giving troves of information to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks, but military prosecutors want to prove Manning he aided the enemy, which carries a potential life sentence.
