Since 2004, the deadly tornado that ground through Hallam, Neb., was the widest tornado known to have touched down in the U.S.

That changed Friday, when a devastating, highly unusual tornado churned through a rural area outside of Oklahoma City, crossing Interstate 40. The tornado claimed at least seven lives, including three noted storm-chasers.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Storm Prediction Center announced that the El Reno tornado is now the widest analyzed in the U.S. The center also upgraded the El Reno tornado to an EF5 category, from what had been the EF3 category.

At its widest, the El Reno tornado was measured at least 2.6 miles wide, compared to the 2.5-mile wide path in Hallam, said Richard Smith, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Norman, Okla.
