safe shelters for tornados! Rachel had a lawmaker from OK. on her show, and he said they've turned down offers like this before.

Any links to the story?

(45,806 posts)guest she had on was a State Senator (I think) and he used excuses like "Okies don't like to be told what to do, they want to decide for themselves." He also mentioned that there was a proposal of initiating the building of some shelters and asking for private funding for the shelters. I can't remember everything that was said, but it was apparent that Okies seem to hate anything associated with the Gov't. It just seems dumb to me.

(14,120 posts)They may have had trouble. Many in Oklahoma have it hard enough to make it with what they make on the job.
Sounds like more blaming the victim junk Rachel is getting known for. Big reason I think she stinks.

(45,851 posts)That's what will keep Oklahoma safe, God won't send tornadoes if they just keep His commandments.

(12,778 posts)Actually, I would be perfectly happy with an increase in the state income tax rate dedicated specifically for storm shelters.
"What the hell is wrong with Oklahomans?" That's an awfully broad brush.

(51,076 posts)The town I live in has a community shelter, the small community south of us has a community shelter both of which was built using FEMA money. My hometown east of us has a community shelter by the school district paid for by a bond issue when they upgraded the middle school about 15 years ago. In fact all the communities around me has tornado shelters. Me thinks too many want to shit on us when they have no idea as to what they're saying or doing.

(1,289 posts)My daughter's school was built in 2007. Since it was built after the May 3,1999 F5 that hit Moore, it has "safe halls" built into it. There are hallways built with reinforced steel and concrete and heavy steel doors that are supposed to be able to withstand a F5 tornado. Not sure if all the newer schools have them but I think they do.
