Mr Obama could use his presidential powers to overturn a ruling by the International Trade Commission, a Washington agency, that on Tuesday banned Apple from selling certain iPhones and iPads in the US.
Alternatively, he could follow the example of most of his predecessors in such cases and stand by the ITC ruling. This would favour South Koreas Samsung, Apples bitter rival that was found in an earlier case to be copying the iPhones designs.
Mr Obamas quandary comes as his administration has put renewed focus on patent reform. The last US president to use his veto in an ITC case was Ronald Reagan. Bans ordered by the ITC are subject to a 60-day window in which they are reviewed by the president.

I think Obama should uphold the ban. Apple has been tying up the courts suing Google and Samsung over petty things, and they should play by the rules they themselves seem to have created. However, President Obama is an iFan, so who knows what will happen...

Since this case is open on appeal the President should not do anything
However, the most revealing thing is the devices involved in this ban are outdated, and will have very little effect

(11,489 posts)So Apple is fine in selling iPhone 5 or iPad 4, but can't sell older models? I don't get the point of this. How is them selling older models hurting Samsung or Google?

As everything, and this is not directed against Apple, Samsung, or Google, it is political posturing to fool folks in thinking they are actually doing their job

(154,021 posts)There is little precedent to overturn. Though Apple can go to court over this...expect them.

(2,022 posts)Not sure if that's the POTUS job though.
Apparently Apple and Samsung couldn't negotiate a fair price on a small 3G component.
Otherwise, this will allow patent trolls to have a field day and stifle advancements in tech where mostly the consumer will suffer.

Why would Obama need to get involved?
