RJ Reynolds ordered to pay $8.3 million for false advertising

MONTPELIER — A Vermont judge has ordered R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company to pay Vermont $8.3 million for deceptive advertising of one of its tobacco products.

The state attorney general's office sued the company for advertising its Eclipse cigarettes as a "risk reduction" product.

The attorney general said Tuesday the judge has issued an injunction banning Reynolds from making such a claim without backing it up with studies accepted by the scientific community.
