The Media and the GOP

There is a myth that has been around forever that there is a "liberal media" that creates and promotes the stories that we hear every day. They lead and everyone follows. Facts are neither liberal or conservative but the myth is a conservative, corporatist creation.

Who will tell the people, William Grieder once asked?

Ninety-five percent of the media does not lead with the truth or the facts. They follow the talking points given them by the corporatists and the GOP.

The most recent example is the IRS story. The talking points of the GOP is that "their side" was somehow "targeted" and that they were not treated fairly. It's much like a student complaining to the teacher that he got an "F" and all the smart kids got an "A". So they complain to the media and that becomes the talking point of the media. They follow - they do not lead.

There are a few people, including Rep. McDermott (D-WA), that have stood up to the parrots in the media. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/06/05/rep-mcdermott-snaps-at-fox-news-host-you-are-putting-words-in-my-mouth-stop-it/

They refuse to tell the real story. It is not that somebody may have been treated unfairly. It is that they were breaking the law. The story is that they were not "social welfare" organizations. They were purely political and therefore not eligible for tax exemptions. They knew that and still insisted on breaking the law and are still breaking the law today. The truth is that they are not alone. They are just the most obvious.

"The Obama Administration is spying on all of us. This is unprecedented. This is terrible..."

What they don't tell you is the truth. It is part of the Patriot Act passed early in the Bush Administration. Bush used the same process without any judicial review. But somehow, it was different then. The truth of the matter is that this is a continuation of policy that has been going on for the last ten years.
