Miss World bans swimwear portion at 2013 competition (to avoid offending Muslims)

When the Miss World competition is held this year, there'll be one notable absence — bikinis.

The international event will be held in Indonesia, a heavily Muslim area, and organizers of the event are bowing to local religious pressures and have nixed the bikini portion of the competition.

Instead, all of the 137 contestants will be required to wear Bali's traditional long sarongs. Indonesia is the world's most populous Islamic country.

Miss World Organization chairwoman Julia Morley told the Association of Fundraising Professionals she did not wish to upset anyone and said she respects all of the countries that take part in the competition.

Showing as much skin as bikinis do goes against fundamentalist Muslim teachings and Morley said the organization does not seek to disrespect the culture of the host country.

Is it somehow different when men are objectifying other men? Are fans of these competitions perverts Bill?

Personally I don't have a problem with swimsuit competitions, the whole concept of "beauty" contests reeks of superficiality anyway.

I'll let history speak for itself.

Men have had the upper hand since the beginning of time women have not.

In the beginning women had to do it because society told them to not the men. Argue all you want those are the facts and I'm sticking to them.

P.S. Not only have I voted in men pageants I was in a couple myself. I did it because I wanted to be objectified women do it because society has trained them to do it.

And that leads to people looking at other people. Good grief, the thought of it sickens me.

Look at the pic below, you think anyone is actually looking at their eyes (which would be all they could see if they wore burkas) - no. Those men are being paraded about (probably by some unseen force) for their bodies! They should outlaw the competition and those guys should be in science fairs or spelling bees so no one takes advantage of them based on their barely clothed looks.

Those men are NOT being judged on their looks, they are being judged on their ability to create muscle mass. They have actually worked, and worked hard (ok some take drugs but just taking drugs does not create muscle mass) to create those muscles and to shape them. I suppose if one of them were ugly they would never have made it, oh wait most of them ARE ugly like Arnold.

But those women parading around in skimpy clothes did very little to create their "beauty". Oh yeah they didn't eat and they may work out once or twice a week, but mostly it's due to luck. They got lucky with nice features, they got lucky with long legs, thin waists, boobs not too big and not too small, and enough money to get cosmetic surgery in certain places. They got lucky and as usual, our capitalist society prefers to reward luck to ability and talent, especially in women.

Who am I to tell them they shouldn't? Their bodies, their choices.

I don't like those pageants so I don't watch them. And if I were a lady I would choose not to enter one.

They chose differently. Being a pro-choice kind of person I am fine with it.

Maybe some Muslims and others think they know best for women but me personally I think maybe we should not cater to the whims of religious folks when they are offended by the female body.

I understand better now why some hate femen so much. Women who dare to take off their clothes....and folks want to punish them for it.

In 1983, the last UK winner of Miss World, Sarah-Jane Hutt, from Poole in Dorset, took the title at The Royal Albert Hall. Three years later, Halle Berry, then Miss USA, stunned the judges and audiences when she wore a bikini featuring stars and ropes of beads during a parade of national costumes. At the time she was quoted as saying that she wanted "to catch the eye from the start." Halle failed to win the contest, but as an Oscar-winning Hollywood star with a string of smash hits under her belt, she almost certainly has recovered from the disappointment. The decade finished with the first-ever Polish winner Aneta Kreglicka.

Damn that Halle Berry for wearing something to catch the eye of people. We need them women folk to be in their place and well dressed to the specifications of some old book (and the horror, a woman wearing something to attract attention of others! Next thing you know some guy will stare and worse yet...he might open a door for her )

Don't like the pageants? Don't enter or watch them.

I take it you are OK with a religious group trying to control these women and the choices they made (then knowingly entered a pageant that had swimsuits as part of it)?

Maybe those fundies are right after all - women do need people to make choices for them and protect them. Just like we need women here to tell those other women that they are wrong and too stupid to understand their own choices.

This is not a government run function. Don't like it, don't enter or start your own.

They have had this thing going on longer than I have been alive - and they are bowing to pressure from some fundies that say women are best covered up (and that seems to be something some here want as well, hence the hatred towards femen - women dared to show their skin in protest).

Do I think their rules suck? Yep. Will I watch it? Nope.

But I sure as hell will say that I don't think left wing or right wing fundies should be telling women what to wear over fear of upsetting God or whatever.

Maybe you and others want women to stay under covers but I think it should be up to them and up until this pageant they could actually wear those evil bikini's. Rest assured though, this year they won't show their evil flesh and allah will be happy.

Of course, I am somewhat biased in this all because (ok, prepare yourself for something terrible here which some will want me banned over) I like to look at beautiful women. I know....99% of the human race doesn't, hell most people don't even look at paintings and say they are beautiful (they look at the brush strokes and think about the artist....). There are a few of us out there though that can, as adults, say we see someone as "pretty" (and trust me when I say this, I won't ever, ever in my life again, make the mistake of telling someone they look nice or are pretty - cause that is all sorts of messed up from what I have learned).

So yeah, bring on the clothes to hide their bodies and let's celebrate that we saved them women from being too dumb to make their own choices and drink to the fact that allah won't kill us all over it.

Makes sense to me.

and limit what they can/cannot do.

Those women are weak and need us to step up and save them from their own decisions.

Of course in this case what women have traditionally done in the contest they have freely chosen to enter is being changed to fit the needs of a religious group, which some people seem to love the idea of for some reason (well, I know why, they like controlling people and their personal choices).

They're not doing it to eliminate objectification. It should still be galling, no?

The whole pageant is objectification and they're dropping one piece of it to appease the religious sensibilities of one group of people.

They're not dropping it because of how woman are treated in the world.

While the effect is the same, it seems like you should still be suspect of the motives.
