Authorities say three people are dead and two critically injured after a hostage standoff at a quiet Florida recreational vehicle park.
The Broward Sheriff's Office reports that 41-year-old William De Jesus fatally shot 76-year-old Ovila Plante late Thursday outside the older man's RV at Highland Woods RV Park in Deerfield Beach. De Jesus then barricaded himself inside the RV with his family and the dead man's girlfriend, who eventually escaped.
After a seven-hour standoff, a SWAT team entered the RV early Friday. They found De Jesus and his 9-year-old son dead. De Jesus' wife and 7-year-old son were suffering from stab wounds.

(6,086 posts)LAPTOP??!! Far as I'm concerned, the laptop was a stand- in for the actual daughter. How much time will it take before he actually SHOOTS HER?? Brotherman needs to be arrested and put into mandatory mental health treatment.

Or is it OK to go around sticking people into mental health treatment because they say or do something that makes us uncomfortable? What specifically is the cutoff? How do we keep the authority to prevent potential crimes from being abused?
(I know, it sucks to have to look at an entire forest when all we are interested in is the pretty trees)

(6,086 posts)no way you can justify or rationalise what this nut did. NO NORMAL PERSON WOULD DO THIS. I grew up with an EXTREMELY abusive "father" and I know pathology when I see it. Although I wouldn't characterise myself as a gun nut, I believe that people have the fundamental right to own guns BUT when they display this kind of behaviour, someone has to get involved. Trust me, if that daughter were around 10 or 11, CPS would be involved fast, quick and in a hurry. Frankly, I don't understand why they haven't gotten involved at this point.
You may seem to find it amusing that he shot the girl's laptop but I don't. In families with abuse issues, something like this can QUICKLY turn into a tragedy FAST! I have first hand experience in these typos of situations. This ain't funny nor is it the type of situation that should be minimalised. You must be looking at the rock garden because the trees in this forest are about to fall onto the family home.

(5,169 posts)It was a stupid, STUPID move, but reading and watching him doesn't give me the same creepies as others.
She was not harmed, and she got a valuable lesson about the power of the Internet to screw up your life.
But seriously, I have heard some f***ed up stories about what happens in foster care from my ex-wife, my "little sis", and a friend who have been through it. If you HAVE to pull children out of a home, you need to make sure they don't end up in a worse situation.
I am tempted to say we need clear, objective standards about when families are broken apart, but really, human behavior is too complex for inflexible standards. Some cases are clear cut. This, dead laptop or not, is not so clear.
(BTW I am in no way condemning the millions of loving foster parents out there. What I am saying is, they need to be closely monitored, with weekly visits and annual full scale evaluations, and that system cannot afford to be overloaded with children who don't NEED to be there)

(6,086 posts)to be an overhaul of CPS. I didn't have that option when I was being beaten as a young girl by a "father" over 6'6" in height. Oftentimes, abusive men, (and women), hit "THINGS and pets" before they practise their violence on the actual person. trust me. This is a VERY dangerous situation. People who have never lived with this type of abuse don't understand what this can turn into, trust me.
How many times, when something tragic happens, is the home often photographed as having busted doors, broken windows, holes in the walls. etc? Trust me, this is a tragedy waiting to happen and I would almost bet you a fatburger, that we'll be hearing about a serious assault and/or murder in this household.

(16,113 posts)He is an irrational man who will likely use the gun on his daughter next, kicks puppies, beats his wife and children, cheats on his taxes, and votes republican. You can discover everything there is to know about a person or situation from a brief youtube video or an audio clip. That's why I hate Alec Baldwin.

(16,588 posts)If the daughter is bothered by it, she can buy her own personal laptop, and if he ever damages that, take him to court.
Of course, she'd have to get a job to do that, and since making her bed is "work" to her, chances of that happening seem small.

(24,331 posts)Riddle me this: if someone is so completely out of it that they decide that wanton destruction and implicit threats are the right way to respond to their teenage daughter being "disrespectful," what do you think the odds are that that person is going to provide a completely unbiased and objective view of the situation, as opposed to coloring it with the version of events that makes THEM look best and most reasonable? Hell, people do that every day, in every situation, even when those people are doing things more reasonable and rational than shooting up their child's computer.

(16,588 posts)Have you never shot a laptop before?
Have you shot *less* than 50 computers in your life? I have to be at least 100 by now.
I'm IT. Some servers tend to get... yeah.
Printers? "Staff meetings" will show up at the range to shoot it.
I do think he has his view, and his bias. He's a prick. His kid needs to learn how to deal with people like him.

(5,169 posts)Nasty stuff. Bought two cans, drank some of the first, decided it was watered down drek, so I shot the second with a .22LR. Little bullet, doesn't get much respect, but it can make a sealed can explode.
Ahhh, the foolishness of youth and testosterone.
I did get to take a sledge to telephones, answering machines and various other electronics that my store either could not get an RMA on, or which had a no ship RMA. Very cathartic and good exercise.
