Switch to Electronic License Plates Could Improve SC Highway Safety

COLUMBIA, S.C. -South Carolina is considering a proposal, still in its early stages, to switch from metal license plates to new electronic license plates, or e-tags, as a way to improve highway safety.

"It's the first of its kind," says David Findlay, co-founder of Compliance Innovations, the South Carolina company that created the e-tags. "It's not an LCD or an LED. What it's made of is electronic paper. It's a new technology that allows you to hold the image with no power whatsoever for over 10 years. The only time it needs power is when you're changing the status or the image on the plate."

That power comes from the vibrations of your car, and from a transparent film over the tag that collects solar power.

The reason e-tags should improve highway safety is because the tags would be electronically linked to the DMV, so if a driver's license has been suspended or his insurance has lapsed, the DMV would send a signal to the license plate. The word "SUSPENDED" or "UNINSURED" would appear on the license plate.

Someone with a suspended license can easily drive a borrowed car, and someone with insurance can easily drive a car whose insurance has lasped.

Say one of them has a suspended license, should the tag be marked as such even though the other 3 drivers are completely legal?

This sounds really stupid to me. Unless of course we are going to add a GPS tracking device to your drivers license so they can tell who is in the car. It's an idea that would probably go over real big these days.

I'm sure it'd be easy squeezy to get started.

Hmmm, which state rep has a brother employed by the company that makes the tags

The idiot in front of you cut you off, a few thumb swipes on your cell phone app and PRESTO-CHANGEO, "ASSHOLE" suddenly appears on the tag(s) of the vehicle in front of you.
Yeah, this will work.

A South Carolina company is proposing that the state abandon regular license plates and switch to electronic plates controlled by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

David Findlay, president of Columbia-based Compliance Innovations, plans to approach state lawmakers with the conversion proposal, which is similar to a plan recently rejected in California, WSOCTV.com reported.

The company is working to get the cost down to $100 per plate.....

( Guess who pays for that?)

It appears the company's sole product is the license plate idea.
