Japanese now admit to rigging (and lying about) baseball games

Specifically, they changed the baseballs, lied about it, swore the baseball company to silence, all under the excuse
"to make the game more exciting".

After months of denial and an inexplicably huge surge in home runs, Japan's baseball chiefs have admitted they secretly switched the design of the ball to make the game more exciting.

Players and fans had repeatedly quizzed Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) bosses after seeing a 40 percent rise in the number of balls that were slugged out of the park so far this season.

In April NPB said the specifications of their ball -- each of which bears the signature of its commissioner Ryozo Kato -- "have not been changed", a statement that was repeated several times since.

But on Tuesday NPB came clean, saying they had asked manufacturer Mizuno to "adjust" the ball to give it greater bounce off the bat and demanded the company keep quiet about the switch.

then I wouldn't consider that rigging. However, it is definitely unfair to pitchers.

They cheated other players out of a fair comparison of statistics. According to the Nippon Professional Baseball story, their players were simply better in 2013 than those of the previous three years. Then there's the thing about international comparisons. I don't see how you can fairly compare current Japanese players with those in other countries, since the NPB ball was importantly changed as we have learned.

over another, even pre-determining the final score. I don't see that here, although it does seem unfair to pitchers and earlier players' records. But it doesn't seem any more egregious than designing a ballpark in New York so that certain left-handed hometown power hitters could be given an advantage.

years and years of statistics, allowing fans to compare players from one era to another.

Changing the variables of the game messes with that history. That's why, IMO, the steroid era is such a blight on baseball.

i can see how it has to be done within reason, but it's not like the original design of the ball was handed down by God.

I have a very different idea of fairness, honesty and games. You seem more like the Reagan notion....greed at any price as long as you win.

it doesn't favor one team over another for example. I'll concede it's an honesty issue because they did it in secret, and when they did that here back in the 1990's I was a little disillusioned. But I've come to see the game as a product, and products get formula changes.

and 'sophisticated' people understand it's just a product. Got it.
