Moral Monday Draws 'Moron Monday' Insult From Republican As Dozens Arrested In North Carolina

Nick WingThe Huffington Post Jun 11, 2013

Swarms of demonstrators gathered outside the North Carolina General Assembly building on Monday, fulfilling their promise to continue weekly "Moral Monday" protests against the state's GOP-controlled agenda.

The crowd, which numbered in the thousands, according to the Charlotte Observer, was largely made up of clergy members and other civil rights groups, including the state chapter of the NAACP. As many as 84 people were arrested, WTVD reported, among them Charlotte Observer reporter Tim Funk, who was on hand interviewing demonstrators as part of his coverage of the event. Police said he failed to disperse when asked, though he was reportedly wearing the appropriate media credentials.

More than 151 people were arrested in last week's "Moral Monday" protest, and in total, more than 350 have been arrested in six separate demonstrations held since late April.

The coordinated events have cropped up as a response to the GOP's monopolization of power in Raleigh. Republicans won control of both chambers of the state legislature and of the governorship in November. Protesters have spoken out specifically against the Republicans' moves on voter ID legislation, hydraulic fracking, cuts to education spending and the rejection of Medicaid expansion under Obamacare.

..more..

But let's be realistic...there have been people confronting them for decades now...Like OWS and with the power of the surveillance state they can be marginalized.

Monday the GOP takes the day off....Tuesday it is back to normal....same with any protest in DC...usually on a week end when no one is there anyway, and Monday it is back to normal in the capital.

They know how to deal with protest and they do...and unless it is massive and continuous they just blow it off....and we can't seem to make it massive and continue because we will lose our jobs....and they know this.

Week after week the waves gather, people are arrested. It's now a national story.
The protesters meet in a church, agree to the principals of nonviolence. There is jail solidarity and support for the people who choose to be arrested. Very much in line with an MLK jr. strategy. And, it keeps growing!

they are feeling the spotlight. But the GOP has a similar wrecking ball approach in many states. Something like this needs to be repeated across the country.

wicked. So is GOPers in WI, MI, FL, SC, and many more. But alas, don't vote or vote against your own interest is a factor. I know that SC and other states are red as can be and voting another color can be challenging, and thats why in NC protesters are fighting back and maybe a glimmer of light will succeed. More Power to them!

what our state is going to look like when these idiots are done. They already had a mapped out agenda when they came in and are executing it at breakneck speed. It's been "slash and burn" from day one.
