But by the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming; her once serene image was shattered by a wild demeanor and bizarre public appearances. She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once pristine voice became raspy and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.
"The biggest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy," Houston told ABC's Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 interview with then-husband Brown by her side.
It was a tragic fall for a superstar who was one of the top-selling artists in pop music history, with more than 55 million records sold in the United States alone.

Whitney Houston, superstar of records, films, dies

By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP Music Writer – 3 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, has died. She was 48.

Publicist Kristen Foster said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unclear.

At her peak in the 1980s and '90s, Houston the golden girl of the music industry and one of the world's best-selling artists.

Among her hits were "How Will I Know," ''Saving All My Love for You" and "I Will Always Love You." She won multiple Grammys including album and record of the year.

It broke through the AP across my phone a good 5-6 minutes before any internet confirmation and at least 10 minutes before cable news broke in.

She was gigantic back in the 80s and 90s, and then drugs ruined everything for her. Michael Jackson a few years ago and now Whitney? Wow.

that her entourage would clean them up before the police get there? Of course, her heart could have given out due to years of drug use too. Drug addiction takes a very heavy toll on one's body.

I looked at the photos from her appearance last night and she didn't look good (and by that I mean, wasted) but this photo seems especially disconcerting to me.

43. The biggest thing about drug addiction is that no one can help you

if you don't want to be helped. You can drag an addict to rehab, you can order an addict to rehab but if the addict doesn't WANT to get clean, they won't. Often times, you have to make the decision to let the addict go because they'll drag you down with them. It's not a pretty world to get drawn into, even if peripherally.

Edit:
Even if Houston had kicked drugs, the toll they take on a body, especially if the drug abuse was quite severe as it seemed in her case, is devastating.

What were they supposed to do?!?!?! Sleep on her floor and drive her all around all day and not let her go to the bathroom by herself??? People who've never had to deal with a drug addict commonly have the notion that a drug addicts loved ones should babysit them 24/7 to force them off drugs.
