Cavemen of Manchester: Migrants from Eastern Europe live in squalor underground

Squalid: An Estonian huddles up in a cave near Stockport that is strewn with rubbish and filth. For him it is home.
LFR note on pic: Reason one ends up keeping rubbish near is to keep it hidden. Trash is a dead giveaway of your presence. If you got a good hiding place, better to hide signs like you see in pic there to.

According to homelessness charity Wellspring, Stockport’s sandstone caverns now hold up to four occupants at any one time.

Project manager Jonathan Billings said the number of people needing support has more than doubled to 140 in three years – with many from Eastern Europe.

He said some rough sleepers had fallen into the river or been targeted by arsonists.

‘Nobody wants to see people living in a cave,’ he said. The caves were reputedly dug by hand in the 17th century

LFR note: This kind of living is not just in Eastern Europe. We have people here in the United States that live in conditions like this... or worse.

LFR note: This kind of living is not just in Eastern Europe. We have people here in the United States that live in conditions like this... or worse.

Homelessness in this country is not talked about for many reasons.

Some say it brings down people's spending. It makes them worry and save back "too much" money. (I know, stupid excuse, but it is one used)

Others say it is for Homeland Security reasons. If such things get too main stream, we will look weak. (I know, but it is yet another excuse used to NOT talk about it)

The real reason is that people just DO NOT want to think about it. Newspapers and shows know that it is a turn off to many, thus Sales Depts. don't like it talked about due to people not watching or reading.

That leaves one to have to use other stories from other places to start a dialog on the subject. This story is a perfect example of what is happening in places in THIS country. However, many do not want to think of it happening here and it is hard to find stories for reason listed above.

So if a foreign story can help open talks...

People are welcome to dig out their own living space, and it seems to be working. The work is pretty sophisticated. Anyone recall the name of the place?

At least these poor people have sunlight. But hey, that'll teach em all for being poor.

Many live in places like this, or worse, here in the U.S. Some are whole families doing this.

It is one of the saddest things you can see, let alone living it.

Have you seen the documentary about the people in NY? If not, I highly recommend it. Dark Days. The entire things on youtube.
