My city and the local garbage company provide an annual Spring Cleanup, no charge.

They'll pick up 12, 32 gallon trashcans or the equivalent boxed / bundled. Standard curbside service.

The emphasis is on recycling, outside junk removal and a general assist for residents to pare down on unused stuff. The only limits are hazardous wastes, of course. Large appliances are picked up at a reasonable $10 each.

It's timed with the semester turnover at the university (more than half of the students live off-campus, in town). So it's a win win.

It's a great service and a good deal for the whole community.

Our community started a dumpster program two years ago. One Saturday in the Spring and Fall, the county drops off two construction dumpsters at the community center with several volunteers to help unload the junk from your vehicles. It's been pretty successful. This year they also brought in a company that provides a shredder truck for people to get rid of old papers with personal information they wouldn't want to put in recycling or the landfill. This is the DC area so shredding is pretty common. LOL.

There were (are) some complaints about pickers coming through the neighborhoods on the days leading up to the pick-up, but most people say "take it!" And more power to them if they are industrious enough to drive around and take things they might sell or use. It's a great city service.
