Just read in the Washington Post today that the National Weather Service confirmed 6 tornados in the DC area Thursday during the Derecho.
All 6 tornados were EF-0s, but the wind from the storm damaged a few homes in the neighborhood.

(131,006 posts)but didn't know it at the moment; just got really wet leaving the car, returning from DC's metro rail @ Glenmont. Went to a cafe that had power after ours quit, and customers said friends of theirs in the neighborhood had seen it.
Didn't know there had been so many others, but haven't read WaPo.

(978 posts)Apparently that tornado touched down in Rockville and traveled East to Burtonsville which is near us in Laurel. That tornado was 150 yards wide. CNN had mentioned there was one north of Laurel.
A Facebook friend took a photo of one near Bladensburg and Cheverly. There was one near Lexington Park near the Patuxent Naval Station. There was also a waterspout in the Potomac River near Charles County.
Another touched down in Woodbine earlier in the week and took out a storage building. So that's at least 7 tornados in one week and the waterspout.

Interesting you mention Lexington Park. Haven't been there, but thinking of moving, and found a few places there @ craigslist.

(14,040 posts)I had no clue we were under a tornado watch. My roommate was in DC freaking out (after the fact) cause I didn't know about it.

(978 posts)It traveled along that 28/198 route. I remember hearing on the news that people driving along the ICC should take cover so Georgia Avenue and Silver Spring were in it's path. The article, unfortunately didn't say where all 6 tornados were. There could have been a couple in that area and I'm getting confused. LOL.
Lexington Park has been in the path of tornados before. There seems to be a tornado alley in Maryland where tornados start in Virginia and cross the river into Southern PG and Charles County.
Now that I remember seeing on CNN and Channel 9 there were two purple Doppler cells of the Derecho that had circulation spawning tornados. One was to the North which affected Gaithersburg and Rockville and moved East towards Laurel. Then there was a southern one which affected the area between College Park, Bladensburg and Greenbelt and headed East towards Lexington Park.
The weather guy on CNN kept mentioning Rockville.

(131,006 posts)Daughter dropped me off in Aspen Hill/Silver Spring/Rockville in furious rain, headed across ICC FROM Georgia Ave toward P.G. County. She texted me about how GREAT ICC was getting them to 495 and rte 50 so quickly.
Guess I should pay attention to Maryland's tornado alley(s) before I move, eh? Do want to be closer to daughter in P.G., and in a scenic spot.
