The second annual "Take Your Daughter to the Range Day" was held at Shooter's World in Phoenix over the weekend.
The national event was aimed at promoting gun safety through education. It also enabled families "to spend quality time together through this experience," according to a news release distributed by Shooter's World.
"As a female working in the firearms industry, it is a pleasure to be able to host an event such as this that will allow young ladies of all ages to learn the importance of safe firearms handling while hopefully empowering them to make their mark on a formerly male-dominated sport," said Shooter's World owner and CFO Lisa Roux.
"We truly hope our customers will take this opportunity to introduce their daughters to shooting, or continue to help them grow their shooting skills, in a safe and fun environment," Roux added.
Christopher Durfee was one of the dads who took his daughter, Robin Lynn, to the shooting range. He said the highlight was "seeing her nail the target in the head three times."

Did they not have an age cutoff?

Seems that under 18 needs to be accompanied by an adult. They don't have a cutoff age
http://www.azshootersworld.com/go2/range_rules.cfm
They also have some targets to download that some people would take issue with

that's quite the bigoted statement there.

Didn't the Arizona gun cultists lose one of their "leaders" not long ago - reddy or something like that?

(54,770 posts)Heck, you guys are unlikely to ever need a gun, yet you carry them, accumulate them, train for the unlikely event you need them, etc. You don't care about science.

(3,731 posts)just like my father did with us kids, I started taking my kids out shooting when they turned age 7.
Great bonding experience and they had alot of fun shooting the .22 rifle and .410 shotgun.
Of course, I tightly supervised my kids, just as my father tightly supervised us.

Yeah, she was shooting at a piece of paper.
Odds are you don't know anything about him.

(3,731 posts)Didn't see anything in the article stating that. How do you know that it wasn't a target of a deer? Or a turkey? or a zombie?
Fact is that you jumped to an unfounded conclusion without 1 iota of evidence.

(3,731 posts)Show me where in those photos where there's a target it the form of a human?
All dad said was that he was proud that she could hit the head, show us where he said it was a human head?
You, on the other hand, very obviously didn't even look at the article or photos and just immediately jumped to the wrong conclusion without any evidence of what you claim.

(3,731 posts)that's a person, not a target. I even got my magnifying glass out just to be sure, and guess what? It's a live man with a rolled up target in his left hand.
Sheesh Hoyt, time to get your eyes checked.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)a human running around, if you are correct that the range operates like an old bowling alley with pin (target) boys.
I've blown both photos up, I've examined them closely with a magnifying glass, there is no human shaped target in either photo.
Just admit that you are mistaken and move on.

(54,770 posts)The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)99% of gun owners don't harm people and I am sure a ton of them use human shaped targets for practice (as well as other ones, you can get Zombie Targets at some chain stores).
When I was little we played war, cops and robbers, etc where we pretended to shoot each other. We drew pictures of super heroes fighting evil villains, and had a little tank game where you drew them on paper and pushed the pencil to draw an attack line.
Only person I knew to grow up in the hood and kill someone didn't play with us (was still a friend and neighbor) and he used a car to run over someone (intentionally).
If all you focus on are the few who do terrible things your mind will be conditioned to only see that. 700,000 injured by drunk drivers a year not to mention other people driving cars. And we have a shit ton of laws on the roadways. I could post a hundred stories a day about people killed by cars - and we let 16 yr old's drive em (and some of them probably go and watch crash up derbies - does that mean they want to smash into you while on the road?)

NRA Prez taught his son how to shoot people. Son did just that in a road rage incident.
When you buy a gun, promote guns, oppose sensible restrictions, etc., you do contribute to the craziness.
The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)I am controlling what others do? Wow.
The restrictions we now have in place seem to work fairly well where the majority of gun owners are concerned. And many laws don't have the funding to be enforced. How many more laws do we need?
And let's say OK to universal background checks - and someone gets a gun then later has issues and kills people...what new law then would prevent that from happening?
When you have less than 1% of a group causing the issues maybe it is time to look at other reasons why such things happen and address those instead of the tools they are using. But that takes more work and asking harder questions.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)Besides, the odds of your needing a gun are less than 1%,yet you need them close by.

(7,720 posts)on the 'Take Your Kid to Work Day' my brother brought his then 12 year old son to work with him. He had the boy load MP-5 and AR-15 magazines. They then went to the police range and shot them. My brother is a cop. The boy is now 23, a college graduate and yes, he did find a job with his business degree.

(1,799 posts)Because I would never let my young boys near firearms. I just don't get it. I wouldn't let them use fireworks or drive a car either-they're just too young.
My father and grandfather hunted when I was a kid but I don't ever recall even seeing their guns. Of course, my grandfather grew up in the hills of West Virginia where they would hunt for dinner.
We just go to the grocery store.
The boys do have some toy guns but I don't let them play violent video games either.

(37,648 posts)I think it's great that girls are learning to use weapons, and not just boys. Girls need to learn self-defense, protection, CARS, how things are put together, how to mow the lawn, etc. All those things I had to teach myself as an adult or pick up from friends and other family members along the way.
I did learn how to sew when I was a girl, and that came in handy. Boys should learn that, too. And I learned basic cooking skills, but really, learning basic cooking skills is something that hasn't come in that handy. Yeah, I cook some basic things, but it's so easy that learning this as a child is unnecessary, unless you want to be an excellent cook (which I don't care about).
Learning basic plumbing, electrical work, a little about cars, will save girls a bundle of money over the years. Learning to shoot a gun comes in handy, when it comes to self protection (she'll be a target of rapists & other criminals for much of her life). Learning to make soup? Meh...throw some stuff in a pot with chicken stock, turn the heat on, and you have soup. But it's pretty cheap to buy, anyway.
