It's nothing new -- it's been this way forever.
I'm not talking about posting crap we knew ten years ago as if we never knew it (drones, data mining, surveillance). I'm talking about hundreds of threads on the same subject day after day after day. "Where's the outrage!" as if we hadn't been talking about this subject endlessly for two solid weeks.
Why do we do it?

(2,347 posts)where if dupe threads on the same topic are posted, they get merged. One of the odd things I've noticed about this place is the lack of any such thing. Makes going through the threads here extremely annoying.

(45,851 posts)At least at DU there's a chance someone might respond intelligently (bear with me here) while on the TV you already know how every little titter is going to come out, the political shows being the most highly scripted of all.

EDIT. Not too late. It's not a voting option.

You should ask those who do this why they do this rather than affect the notion that a collective 'we' does this.

(38,437 posts)I think you are splitting hairs.

(45,319 posts)I think. In this case, what you speak of is as I say, a habit held by a few here. To ascribe that to the community is not accurate, Buzz. But doing so does serve that few. But I tire of individuals speaking in the plural as easily as I do of being painted with broad brushes.
I think people should speak for themselves and about specifics.

(2,774 posts)somewhere along the line DU stopped being a site for discussion, debate and information-sharing, and morphed into an echo chamber used to a) reinforce personal beliefs/biases/agendas, and b) reassure the holder of those beliefs that they're "right" as indicated by the vocal support of like-minded individuals.

(40,416 posts)But mostly it is because of two things.
1. People post without looking whether it's already been posted. Whether they care or not, it's irrelevant. Partially, it's because people are lazy.
2. People repost threads even knowing its a repost because they want a specific viewpoint advanced in the forums. There's nothing like confirmation bias even when one imposes it upon oneself.
I can't say that I like either justification.

(202 posts)And are otherwise occupied, precluding them from reading and being fully aware of every post on this or any other board.
But, the phenomenon of "chat board bosses" and self appointed discussion moderators complaining about it goes back a long way to usenet, IRC and BBS's.
Some of the best flame wars resulted from arguments over "dups", they could go on for pages.

(38,437 posts)I find that quite forgivable. My poll was referring more to a) the same poster putting up slightly different versions of the same opinion over and over and b) multiple people posting the same thing in the period of a couple hours or less; and not just once or twice, but again and again.
