And when he won over Hillary and then in the big election, I've supported him more than his original supporters here.

(70,740 posts)For the 12 Mittens duration, I am submitting this angry cocker spaniel for use as the representative of all dogs. This pic was in the local paper's Sunday available-for-adoption a few years ago. He was taken by the time I called. He is thoroughly pissed, not, I hope, the reason he ended up in the shelter, but rather for being subjected to the indignity of doggie jail.

(37,648 posts)I'm a white female, and I was one of Obama's early supporters. I never wavered.
Obama being black is maybe why Oprah publicly endorsed Obama and had him on her show. But that's not why she voted for him. And she had him on her show and publicly endorsed him in order to help him, not JUST because he was part black, but because of the historical nature of it. If he had been the fifth black Democratic nominee running, she probably wouldn't have publicly endorsed him or had him on her show. But I suspect she usu. votes Democratic, regardless of race.
Most Af. Americans vote Democratic, but what Obama's race did was enthuse the Af. American community, so that more showed up to vote. But again, it wasn't just because of his race, although that was the main thing. It was also because of the historic nature of it. It was a first in the country's history, and there was a time that such a thing was unthinkable.
Not that there's anything wrong with an Af. american voting for Obama because he's part black. But I don't like them ascribing their shallow reason for voting for him to others' reasons for voting for him. I wouldn't vote for anyone just because of his or her race or gender or whatever. Sometimes, the person who best represents my interests is not a white female, altho that is what I am. I voted for Obama over Hillary in the primary, even tho Hillary "looked like me."
