Former QWest CEO: Verizon, ATT, & Bell South gave data to NSA BEFORE 9/11

I have little reason to doubt these allegations considering all the lying & deception that's so intrinsic to the Bush administration.

This spying orchestrated by the Bush administration would have been CLEARLY illegal & clearly it did NOT STOP 9/11

In which case the Patriot act & all it's support is nothing more than a fairytale from hell....

Bush-Cheney began illegal NSA spying before 9/11, says telcom CEO

The Bush administration bypassed the law requiring such actions to be authorized by FISA court warrants, the body set up in the Seventies to oversee Executive Branch spying powers after abuses by Richard Nixon. Former QWest CEO John Nacchios said that at a meeting with the NSA on February 27, 2001, he and other QWest officials declined to participate. AT&T, Verizon and Bellsouth all agreed to shunt customer communications records to an NSA database.

In 2007 the Denver Post reported:

""Nacchio suggested that the NSA sought phone, Internet and other customer records from Qwest in early 2001. When he refused to hand over the information, the agency retaliated by not granting lucrative contracts to the Denver-based company, he claimed.""

Other sources corroborate the former CEO's allegations, which were made in the course of his legal defense against insider trading charges. Both Slate.com and National Journal have published reports in which sources are quoted which support the former CEO's claims.

No system is going to catch the well done plan. And 9/11 while an act of terror and poor targeting was none the less done well. The only mistake being battle duration. That booboo is why the fourth plane nose dived into a field.
The system will help catch those who don't dot the I's and cross the T'. And is worthless at catching the loners like the Unibomber.

and they succeeded.

From my vantage point I see the blanket surveillance of Americans is more about controlling your domestic enemies that oppose your political agenda including illegal wars & lawlessness by law makers on behalf of corporations than fighting terrorism. The results are becoming very self evident.

As for the 9/11 plan being well done that is quite debatable. There were plenty of warnings that are well documented. 9/11 at best was a complete failure of the US intelligence community and the Bush administration IMO.

The Bush/Cheney administration new well in advance about an attack on American soil and sat back and did NOTHING because they needed a Pearl Harbor moment to unleash the Patriot Act and take us to war.

And sorry to burst your bubble, but the Bush Admin knew a LOT of things. They were far from stupid, but playing the stupid card allowed them to do things that should have been impossible had more people seen them as evil rather than incompetent.

For instance:

I find it odd that you would be the very first poster on this thread and would immediately try to exonerate Bush/Cheney NOT for instituting an illegal NSA spying program, but for not catching the 9/11 attackers using the new illegal spying program. The 9/11 attacks are not part of the OP and yet you immediately offer that there is no way for Bush/Cheney to have known about the attacks using such a program. Very odd indeed!

I would offer that the subject YOU brought up is EXACTLY where this story needs further investigation. If the Bush/Cheney cabal DID have the ability to monitor massive amounts domestic communication and if the FBI already had knowledge of suspicious middle-eastern men in flight training, it seems likely that the monitoring would have caught the planners prior to the attack.

In short, this revelation adds significant fuel to the LIHOP theories of the past decade.

Cheers!

After 9/11/ happened - the Patriotic Act and Americans were willing to give up their PRIVACY.

Apparently they did do it before 9-11. I think 9-11 gave them a great excuse to continue and enhance it. Which adds to my "LIHOP" theory.

Binney said was the equipment for this massive operation rolled in in Sept 2001

“The decision must have been made in September 2001,” Mr. Binney told me and the cinematographer Kirsten Johnson. “That’s when the equipment started coming in.” In this Op-Doc, Mr. Binney explains how the program he created for foreign intelligence gathering was turned inward on this country. He resigned over this in 2001 and began speaking out publicly in the last year. He is among a group of N.S.A. whistle-blowers, including Thomas A. Drake, who have each risked everything — their freedom, livelihoods and personal relationships — to warn Americans about the dangers of N.S.A. domestic spying.

That came from this thread: Former NSA Senior Official. "slippery slope toward a totalitarian state". MUST WATCH

We're not dealing with off-the shelf equipment from Radioshack which makes the timing very important.

9-11 gave them a great excuse to ram it through Congress with most Americans too stunned to put up much of a resistance.

Since all the data is stored, I want to see their metadata. The American people deserve that in exchange for the price WE paid since 2011. And we didn't get to make a profit. Carlyle's profit on privatized intelligence alone is HUGE.

Hey Triana, is that what you were thinking of, or do you have something else. If you have more than that statement by Binney, can you send it to me?

I just listened to it thanks to this thread "Binney: US has copies of most of your emails" by Th1onein

This was in April 2012

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: And are there any members in Congress that you see waging a good fight around this issue?

WILLIAM BINNEY: Well, Senators Wydall sic and Udall are, so—Wyden and Udall, they are. And there are others. They’re just not speaking up. Of course, the problem is, you see, they can’t tell you what their concern, because—

LAURA POITRAS: Well, why? Why can’t they tell you? I mean, what would be the repercussions if you’re in Congress?

WILLIAM BINNEY: Well, because what happens when—if they did, for example, they would lose their clearance immediately and be off the committees.

So if a Congressperson asks too many questions, caused too many waves, they "would lose their clearance immediately and be off the committees". And if you lose your clearance, you can't see any information period.

So this guy refused and they brought him up on insider trading charges. No need to wonder how that investigation began or how they found something to drag him through the mud so quickly.

The former you can keep it contained, the latter not so much.

but we as a country are in full denial of where we are... and it is not a nice place.
