tried mouth to mouth and chest palpitations but no response.
on edit,
I usually get home around 9pm, last nite I got home at 11pm...sat at my computer as I turned it on then heard a noise, sounded like a box was knocked over...I looked over to where the noise originated and saw my cat in a full stretch near an empty cardboard box
looking directly at me...she gave an odd meow then lay there...I noticed she was not blinking or moving, i waited a moment then went to her..she did not respond, I lifted her and she was completely limp..nothing..I thought she might have overheated as it was quite warm in the house so I took her outside and set her on the cool concrete of my patio..still nothing
I petted her vigorously thinking it might stimulate her but.. still nothing
I poured some water on her body to cool her and the put my mouth on hers and filled her lungs while pushing with my fingers on her chest..still nothing, I did this for a few minutes but she never responded...I left her there hoping she was just in a catatonic state and would come out of it
I waited an hour then lifted her and noticed her body her body had cooled...I placed her in her box.... she's at the vet's now, i'm having her cremated...she was a great cat..I was so numb last night....thank you for all the amazing and heartfelt responses...it helped a great deal...............thank you, you are awesome.

(103,856 posts)You gave her a great life, loved her, and she did not have a lingering painful struggle at the end..
Three of my older cats suffered at the end and we had have the vet help them go.. It's so awful to see them slipping away day by day, and to know just when is the right time to finally say goodbye. It almost sounds as if your girl may have had a stroke.
Our Amber was 21 when she died....Mommie was 18 and Bubby was only 9 but he had congestive heart failure.. We lost all three last year..
The others are younger, and may out live both of us, but you just never know..
to you for loving Cella...

(4,452 posts)The last cat I had died in my lap. It's been about eight years but I can still remember the look on her face. She crawled over to lay on my lap and she was gone. I still miss her but at least she died where she felt most comfortable.

(5,167 posts)for her.
You can be somewhat consoled with that.
Life is like that sometimes, even with our pet animals.
In the end, I think that's probably a better way to go than growing very old, suffering, with you trying to ameliorate her pain, etc.
So really, she had a good death.

(34,087 posts)She had been declining, and we had her trapped in the bathroom all day because she had gotten incontinent (and a bit dotty). It had become very clear she was ready to die any minute, and I left for work expecting her to be gone when I returned home - but she wasn't. I picked her up and put her on my chest and laid down on the bed with her, and she held my gaze until she was gone a couple of minutes later.
She was the second of three older cats a few years ago to die, and we had been catless for nearly 5 years (at my spouse's insistence) - and 2 weeks ago she broke down and decided it was time for another kitten - so we are back to being owned by a cat.

I'm so sorry, it's hard to lose a furry friend, doubly so when it's so fast we don't get to say goodbye.

(135,425 posts)It's much easier than having a pet linger, and vacillating between the whole "Are they in pain? Are they comfortable?" and "Can I give this animal quality care as they fade away?" questions, and the "I don't have the fortitude to put this family member down..." vs "It's really a kindness" battle that goes on in one's head.

(7,401 posts)I saw a stray gray over the last few days, feral as they come, gaunt, open sores, hiding behind the fence out in back of the building. I talked to it, and the expression on his face affected me deeply.
He's gone now. Nothing left but my memory.
This life thing -- to have been loved, and cared for -- the lucky life, the best life. A good thing, death notwithstanding.

(1,408 posts)It seems you did everything you could. Be comforted that you gave her a good life and that she passed quickly and with someone that care deeply for her.
That happened to my wife a few years ago. The cat walked up to her and stretched like he wanted his head rubbed. He fell when she reached for him and he was gone. We tried the same things you did plus O2 that I was on at the time. Nothing worked.
We have rescued many cats over the years and it is never easy watching them go. Whether they go peacefully or not.
Just remember that because of you, she had a better life than without you.
Take care, and though it may be hard at the moment, remember the good times.
She will always be alive in your memories.

(160,621 posts)I'll bet your life was changed for the better, too.
People who don't know they like cats can discover they are wonderful companions, and deeply interesting to learn about.
It sounds as if your little furry friend didn't suffer horrendously, which would be a blessing.
There is never a good time to lose them, in the end. You learn to love their friendship, and enjoy looking after them.
She seemed to have gone peacefully. That's the one thing you can appreciate about this. In time you may just find you have fond memories of the little critter, and a good feeling you had the time to get to know her.
You will feel better, and you've contacted people who know where you are emotionally. I'll bet in time you will feel it has deepened you to have had that friend, taught you something you didn't know!
