Paula Deen: Food Network Gives Her the ax

Paula Deen's goose has been cooked at the Food Network. Officials tell TMZ they are not renewing her contract, which expires at the end of this month.

Paula apparently was done in for her comments during a deposition in a civil lawsuit, in which she freely admitted to using the N-word in the past.

Deen issued an apology this morning that bordered on ridiculous -- it was heavily edited and frankly insincere.

She issued a second apology shortly before the Food Network said it would not renew her contract.

When Paula Deen Tried To Cook A ‘Sambo Burger’

tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2013/06/paula-deen-sambo-burger.php?ref=fpa

In her 2006 memoir, Deen recounted her evolving views on race with a unique mix of self-reflection and obliviousness.

if you think that most of us have talked about race this way, you must be surrounded by racists.

61. You lost me because I didn't know what you were referring to.
Fri Jun 21, 2013, 07:26 PM

I had to Google the reference. It came from her memoir.

Along with these incidents from her youth, Deen also wrote with a surprising lack of self-awareness about a situation that occurred after she began her television career when she wanted to make a recipe she called the “Sambo Burger” on her show:

“I’ll never forget the day I was doing hamburgers, and I was cookin’ what ended up being called a Beau Burger, which was topped with a fried egg. Actually I wanted to call it a Sambo Burger. It came about when this motorcycle-driving, long-haired lawyer named Sam told me about his favorite little hamburger joint owned by a guy named Beau. When Sam was out tooling along on his cycle, he’d stop off for the best burger in town, topped with a fried egg, some melted cheese, a load of grilled onions—out of this world! One day, Sam was on my set because we were doing a show about motorcycles, and we were standin’ around talking about these burgers and I told him, ‘Sam I am going to do that burger on the show. We’ll call it after you—the Sambo Burger. You know—Sam, Beau. Sounds great, doesn’t it?’”

Deen claimed her producers forced her to rename the burger.

“My producers said no—I had to find another name, because some people associated the name with an old children’s book that was insulting to black people,” wrote Deen. “So we called it a Beau.”

Sat Jun 22, 2013, 05:02 PM
Jun 2013

I'm from the south: born & raised in Charleston, SC, which is pretty fucking close to savannah, where this trainwreck asshole is from.

I'm only 37, far younger than Ms Deeeeeeeeeen, and *I* know that Sambo is a derogatory name for black people.

Shit, growing up, there was a Sambo's restaurant down the street from where I lived. My elementary school had copies of Little Black Sambo in the library.

Southerners *know* what Sambo means, and what it refers to. Especially Southerners of Ms Deeeeeeeeeens' age.

So, being only 37, and having spent the first 25 years of my life in Charleston, SC and it's surroundings, the idea that someone hearing "Sambo" and thinking "Oh, but it's just a mix of the name Sam and Beau" is bullshit.

Ms Deeeeeeeeeen is trying to pull someone's leg by relaying that story as the "aw shucks" reason for the naming of the burger.

She's full of shit.

Here is the Little Black Sambo book that was in my school library. Tell me Ms Dean didn't know this was racist, or that the name implied a stereotypical southern African American

fucking lying racist pig. I'm glad her nasty ass is off the airwaves. She made me embarrassed to be a Southener, with her bullshit sugary sweet exaggerated Yawwl Drawl and buttah buttah buttah. Fuck her. I hope she rots

I don't know the woman, I don't regularly watch her program, although I have her first book (I have a collection of cook books); but I'm against burning at the stake someone because they may have said something inappropriate at some point in their lifetime. according to the NYTimes:

"Ms. Deen has managed to offend even her most uncritical fans before, most recently in January 2012 when she announced she had Type 2 diabetes on the same day she endorsed the diabetes drug Victoza and a lucrative collaboration with Novo Nordisk, the drug’s manufacturer. Because she had built her career on a no-holds-barred approach to sugar and fat (creating recipes like a cheeseburger patty sandwiched between two doughnuts and a Better than Sex cake made with cake mix, pudding mix, and heavy cream), she was roundly criticized for encouraging an unhealthy diet for others, hiding her illness and then trying to profit from it."

She knew that she had diabetes for 3 years and still kept cooking with tons of fat and sugar. She only announced her illness when she had secured a contract with a pharmaceutical company.

I'm not a fan of this woman, but it seems that people are piling on for something she said in the past. What I would like to know is if she still feels that way about AA.

BTW, the Freepers are rejoicing. Apparently she's a Democrat.

Pancetta is Italy's response to bacon, but IMO its higher quality an better tasting for cooking.

Fri Jun 21, 2013, 08:11 PM
Jun 2013

sometime in the future when the dust settles. It's not like they can't be aware that she's quite an unpredictable firecracker. On one version of her previous shows where she had celebrity guests, it looked like she was intoxicated quite often. There's a YouTube video of her in front of a crowd where she looks drunk and is pulling her pants down. I've watched some of the documentary type things about her show, and she's cussing up a storm. Not just cute little granny cuss words, but full on vulgar eyebrow raising cussing (these were the outtakes. They obviously were edited out). On the show where she looks intoxicated, it seriously looks like she's grabbing at the private parts of her male guests and she hoots and hollers at them while she's doing it. It's not like Food Network couldn't see that she was a loose cannon, and they still invested in her.

Don't get me wrong, I think that FN did the right thing here. However crude she is, this is definitely going too far. It's just that she does have quite a following, so I'm wondering if they'll feel pressured to bring her back.

This with that Nigella Lawson domestic violence incident and all that publicity -- it isn't a good week for celebrity chefs!
