U.S. to Send Missile Defense to Jordan for Military Exercise
The Pentagon plans to deploy missile-defense batteries and possibly F-16 fighter jets to Jordan as part of a coming military exercise in the country, U.S. officials said, a show of support for the kingdom at a time of growing U.S. concern that the civil war in Syria could spill across borders.
U.S. officials said it is unclear whether the Patriot batteries could remain in Jordan after the Eager Lion exercise is completed.

Jordan wants U.S. Patriot battery to stay past exercises
Jordan has asked the United States to keep a Patriot missile battery there after an upcoming military exercise as part of a U.S.-backed effort to bolster Jordanian military defenses.
Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren said Jordan made the request but that Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel had "not fully reviewed it."
The United States also has decided to deploy F-16s to Jordan, but it's not clear if a similar request will be made to keep those fighter jets in place.

U.S. Leaving 700 Troops in Jordan After Military Exercises
President Barack Obama notified Congress today that 700 U.S. military personnel are staying behind in Jordan after a training exercise to support the detachment of F-16 fighter aircraft and Patriot missiles.
The training exercise, called Eager Lion, ended yesterday, and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel last week approved a request from Jordan for the planes and missiles to remain. Jordan borders Syria, where rebels are trying to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
All of us who remember the insertion of an increasing number of "advisors" into Viet Nam, have seen this movie before.
UPDATE:
There are MANY more US troops in Jordan now:
another 200 or so troops specializing in military planning from the 1st Armored Division's headquarters were scheduled to arrive later this summer in Jordan, Starr previously reported.

At the same time, U.S. Marines were continuing a longstanding presence in Jordan of about 130 personnel to train Jordanian units slated to go to Afghanistan

Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy also was continuing its longstanding deployment of three anti-ballistic missile ships is the eastern Mediterranean. The ships, with a total crew of about 1,000, carry Tomahawk cruise missiles to defend Israel from any attack by Iran.

(13,685 posts)The only good I see from it is that we might keep Israel from using their nukes.
Other than that, there is no good that can happen.

At the same time, my then husband, spent that entire year with hundreds of other army guys at Fort Rucker
being trained with heliocopters to fly to Viet Nam.
We knew a year ahead of time what the training was for, that everyone was going to Viet Nam, to fight.
Everybody in the area was talking about it.

(13,184 posts)I'll bet Damascus is moving fast to get those new anti-aircraft missiles up and operational.
It seems to me that the US, France, Britain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Turkey are all opening themselves up to attack. They are all now participants in somebody else's civil war. You could say the same thing about Hezbollah and Iran on the other side.
