(20,600 posts)A litmus test is a question asked of a potential candidate for high office, the answer to which would determine whether the nominating official would proceed with the appointment or nomination. (The expression is a metaphor based on the litmus test in chemistry.)

(770 posts)Du has rules which allow certain individuals to censor comments. This takes place in "groups" which state clearly one has to be "like minded" and go with the flow or risk being forbidden from posting if a single "administrator" thinks such censorship is indicated. This has two failings, one it causes self censorship or outright censorship, and such groups tend to be isolated from others' ideas. The second failing is the undue power given to individuals who seem to exercise it without much wisdom. In general it makes the site substandard for me, because I do like to debate. The site of course is designed by its owners, they can run it whichever way they want. But it could be better, I suppose. What I do ask myself is whether many participants would participate if its opened more, some people really like the comfort of being part of a crowd and share exactly the same opinions.

(46,179 posts)you should have known DU was a censored site when you signed up and read the TOS.
The main censorship that happens here is partisan; protection of the Democratic Party. Legitimate criticism is allowed; advocating for any other parties or independents, or their candidates, is not.
The groups? They are mostly there for people with special interests, often outside of politics, to talk about those interests. Most aren't censored anymore than the rest of DU; at least, most that I've visited aren't. I admit to not visiting too many of them. There's some history to the censorship of some of those groups. At one time, a group of people that wanted to discuss, theoretically, knitting, might form a group to do so and find their group spammed by anti-knitters who showed up in force to fill the front page with anti-knitting posts and bomb the knitting threads with attacks. Then posted threads in other places bragging about how much disruption they were causing. The knitting group could, then, solve that problem by outlawing that kind of spam/attack. Then the anti-knitting crew could start their own specialized group whose purpose was to attack knitting.
Clearly, I am not talking about knitting groups here. A
If the conversations had been limited to intelligent discussion and debate from the beginning, that kind of action wouldn't have been needed. A formal debate has rules. Something about anonymous internet posting, though, seems to bring out the bullies, and some people seem to revert to middle school mentality.

(38,437 posts)There are groups where I dare not post or I will have a new asshole torn for my opinions. However, I can express those same opinions in General Discussion with no concern.

Freepers and Third Way/DLC authoritarian conservatives are the only ones so designated thus far.
Several OPs have offered the test over the years, but the vast majority of conservatives are afraid to take it for fear of being outed as conservatives on a progressive Democratic website.
