" In this article, we review the literature on the factors contributing to Facebook use. We propose a model suggesting that Facebook use is motivated by two primary needs: (1) the need to belong and (2) the need for self-presentation. Demographic and cultural factors contribute to the need to belong, whereas neuroticism, narcissism, shyness, self-esteem and self-worth contribute to the need for self-presentation. Areas for future research are discussed."

(19,841 posts)--the problem is that the data entered lives forever and the user gives away all rights to control it. And now we know that the NSA is making sure that it lives forever.

Don't want facebook sharing your info?......don't give them your info.
Don't like reading dumb posts?.......don't friend people that post dumb posts.
Facebook is pretty much what the user makes of it.

That said, from day one I've known not to post anything I wouldn't say to my momma, boss or US government. And it never goes away. It ain't rocket surgery.

(904 posts)because it gives me the opportunity to stay in touch with various folks in my life that would be difficult otherwise. I've also found long lost relatives and friends and to me, this means a lot. Also, my brother and I both belong to a facebook page that was created to bring together folks whose ancestors grew up in a certain part of our community. I've found out various things about my ancestors that would've been difficult to find otherwise. We just uncovered a video on this particular facebook page that my Dad (whose passed 11 yrs ago) was in, a sporting event that took place in 1936 when he was 27 yrs. old. It was priceless and if I wasn't on facebook, would probably not have access to all this.
I know facebook can be a huge garbage can of useless drivel, but if used in a smart way, it can be great.
