Solar Panels to be installed on Whitehouse Roof!

Solar Panels to be installed on Whitehouse Roof!

by beach babe in fl

Finally, Carter's solar panels are coming back! So says President Obamas new Climate Action Plan.

This is symbolic of the President taking leadership on Climate. Well done.

Sorry this is short but important element in new plan deserved recognition.

When the first words in the article are "Carter's solar panels". Which were lambasted at the time and when torn down and were pretty much demonized then. This is a whole nother ball of wax.

And as a solar guy, I frequently hear the phrase "my so and so has solar and it it doesn't work" or "was a waste of money" or "an eyesore" when they are not making the distinction between water and electricity. (AND BTW, they do work, there is nothing that would prevent them from working).

Do you not find the timing a bit coincidental? Waiting 4 years to install solar panels, then making an announcement just before Keystone decision? A decision expected to be approval, thus raising a furor? Does no the solar panel announcement have all the appearences of trying to placate Keystone opponents?

And every single one of us was voting for a change of Bush policies. To be sure, Congress has been petulant. But he had a two year period to get things done, and he squandered it. Many things could have been done without congressional approval, and he continued status quo. Not one of his critics on DU want him to fail, and not one expects him to be 100% perfect...but he just isn't delivering the change he promised and we expected. So we lost hope, and perhaps might bring an end to Bush3.0 in 2016.

Also remember that he followed a "self-appointed" king or "Unitary Executive" and that his first job was to restore the Rule of Law to the office of President, whether than allow it to be an office of Dictator as his predecessor tried to do.

It galls me sometimes that so many people argued against Bush for being a Dictator, and then criticize Obama for not being the same dictator.

Obama you wanna be the environmental prez, (after 6 years of doing absolutely nothing at all to suggest that) then end the oil subsidies and give those subsidies so that everyone can put solar on their house. really it is simple. 80% of homes in the US can supply at least 50% of their electrical needs with solar and over 50% can supply 100% or more.

So nice to grandstand like that but try to actually be the environmental President and solve the problems of the country not just grandstand.

Seriously this is more like the HC bill more and more. And like the HC bill it will be written by lobbyists. And the energy companies will write policy and that means we are FUCKED no matter what. He knows that. There is only one way, and ONE WAY only that we can reverse climate change (if we can at all is open to debate) and that is rooftop solar. And the Corporations will NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER give up how they make money to support solar rooftop power.

lets face it, Obama has put the fox in the henhouse in almost every single instance and there is no reason to think that this will not be exactly the same. (Penny Pritzker????, Ben Bernake? The Monsanto Guy? and on and on)

I am glad that I live where we have a socialist power company that really helps with solar power through rebates etc. instead of gouges for profit. SMUD. the difference is startling.

‘Invest, Divest’: Obama Goes Full Climate Hawk In Speech Unveiling Plan To Cut Carbon Pollution

By Joe Romm

Obama delivered a real stemwinder on the moral urgency of cutting carbon pollution (video, transcript below). So of course Politico reports, “Cable news skips Obama’s climate speech.”

The President surprised everyone by bringing up the Keystone XL pipeline, even though aides had said he wouldn’t. Obama left his Administration very little room for approving it. Heck, he even called them “tar sands”–a phrase that “oil sands” advocates never use.

And Obama gave Climate Hawks a new slogan: “Invest, divest.” MSNBC’s Chris Hayes tweeted:

Christopher Hayes ✔ @chrislhayes

"Invest, divest" is the most crypto-radical line the President has ever uttered.
2:32 PM - 25 Jun 2013

83 Retweets 38 favorites

Climatologist Michael Mann said of the speech, “It is the most aggressive and promising climate plan to come out of the executive branch in years and President Obama should be applauded for the bold leadership he has shown in confronting the climate change threat head on.”

Since this is such an impressive and well-crafted speech, with many lines you will want to quote again and again, I’ll post the entire transcript below. It’s hard to say what the best part was, but we knew yesterday that he was going to put on the table a plan to meet his Copenhagen target of a 17% reduction in carbon pollution by 2005, including regulations for existing power plants.

After all, he knows that most average people cannot afford to have panels installed.

His solution- to petition congress to divert subsidies and pet projects from multi-national oil companies to good old American citizens who want to make this change.

This follow up action (And more to come!) proves this is not just some stunt- but a shot across the bow for a real, nation wide transition to solar power.

I salute these efforts.

Not that my support for him and his record would diminish one bit if he did not- but I'm saying he will.

I'll give him credit if it happens. But its still 4 years late...it would have been a big economic boost 4 years ago when carpenters, plumbers, and electricians were being laid off. And consumers would be on year 5 of reduced electric bills, and the planet would be on year 5 of reduced carbon footprint.
Its like giving a linebacker credit for tackling a runningback at the 2 yardline after a 60 yard run. Ok, he made the tackle, but it should have happened 55 yards ago.

"I will be happy with whatever he does or does not do."

At least you're honest about it.

Not that I think that pissing on Obama for actually doing it is wise. But I can understand the criticism. IMO, this should have been done in March 1993. Still a symbolic victory to have actually done it.

Good for him, Of course it won't float because the corps are running the game, especially in Congress..... And they will not support taking away their livelihoods. i'd love to see it. We have great subsidies here and there is a ton and half of solar going on right now.

Those Republican owned, multi-national pipe-line builders are in for a serious suprise.

LOL! No more subsidieis for those crooks-that is a relic of the Bush era.

Obama is going to divert these funds (OUR MONEY, btw) to people who actually voted for him and supported him- the average American citizen- not some tax dodging, foreign controlled oil company.

I cant wait to see the looks on the Oil Companies faces when they finally get punked!!!!111

Since a GOP POTUS will remove them anyway. Plus, it synchs with his propensity to pay lip-service without doing anything.

Next you will say that we should not borrow money from them so that we can subsidize even more energy (Yes-Maybe even solar!)

Besides- those are the GOOD Chinese- not the evil ones that Snowden associates with.

He is going to green light a national Solar Energy revolution. I can feel it in my BONES this time.

He is NOT going to continue to greenlight and subsidize the oil industries pet projects.

The liberals KNOW it, but they cant stand admitting they are wrong.

Carter installed them more or less as a symbolic gesture. Raygun removed them in even a MORE symbolic gesture. I am glad to see them re-installed. Especially since they are so much more efficient now.

White House Timetable Slips for Solar Roof
Amid a surge of solar energy industry moves aimed at making installations faster, easier, and more affordable, one of the highest-profile rooftop projects is taking longer than hoped.

The Obama administration missed its planned spring 2011 date for putting solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and a heating system atop the White House—an effort meant to boost the profile of the renewable energy technology by bringing it back to the U.S. presidential residence for the first time in 25 years.
