Don't want to single out Texas(I know there's good blue folks there)...BUT

Voter ID laws...vicious anti-choice laws...insane hatred of LGBT's, Hispanics and blacks...

I know it's like that in other states, but it seems, for some reason, much, much, MUCH more toxic and relentless in the Lone Star State these days. I think Lyndon Johnson and Molly Ivins would weep to see what's become of the place they called home.

What is the source of the streak of stubborn fluorescent rage against reality and the rest of the country that keeps blazing in that state?

Why are some(but not all)of the residents there so obsessed with feeding these incandescent flames of inner fury?

Anybody there have any theories about what drives all of that?

The DNC, DSCC and DCCC do not spend money on Texas Democratic candidates. They consider us a waste of funds.

When they call I just tell them I prefer to spend money in Texas instead of national organizations that do not help Texas Democrats.

That usually shuts them up.

I got into one heck of an argument years back with a DCCC phone banker about that very thing.

The answer to what drives this is 'certain Texas oil Republicans'.

bust. There wasn't as much money to be made from the oil biz so not as many interested in changing the politics. Also, I think the gop know they're going to have to carry Texas for any future Presidential candidate.
Citizens United helped the big corps and oil expedite their plans by throwing more money than anyone else could

The GOP know the demographics and the times are against them but they aren't going to do the hard work of re-building their base. They're going to cheat and bully to garner donations and retain their majority as long as they possibly can.

You've got to understand, five years ago, the Democratic Party in Texas was barely alive. That's all changing. The problem is that while the more populous districts lean Democratic, the rural areas tend to vote Republican. The voter ID thing and redistricting are designed to strengthen GOP votes. It's the last, desperate stand of a dying animal. Texas Democrats are waking up, getting strong and spreading awareness. And they're doing it with barely any help from our National party - who keeps blowing us off as a "lost cause".

Regardless, in case you didn't know this, Texas Democrats are fighting back. Right now, State Senator Wendy Davis is conducting a live filibuster to prevent a vote on a particularly horrid piece of anti-abortion legislation. She's got until midnight.

Instead of wondering why the Texas GOP is the way it is, why not help the Texas Democratic Party become what it needs to be?

That's how many votes Texas has in the Electoral College, and it's winner take all. There's no way the GOP is going to let those votes go Democratic without a big hairy fight.
