Folks maybe need to brace themselves for a possible surprise Gomez win in Massachusetts today.

For one reason: "As of 3 p.m., 48,868 voters in Boston, or 12.5 percent of the city’s electorate, had cast ballots, according to state election officials. That is a significant drop from the 2010 special Senate election, when 81,882 voters in Boston, or about 22 percent, had voted in Boston at 3 p.m." - Boston.com

12.5%.

Bank on a lot of that being GOP voters. The idea that voting Republican in Massachusetts is a hopeless cause died a swift death in 2010...and if you think there aren't a lot of conservative voters here, you've bought into the old fiction about "The People's Republic of Massachusetts."

I'm not saying anything here, but I'm having oh, fuck, not again feelings after seeing that turnout number.

Update: as of 6pm, Boston turnout up to 18%. Still below the 2010 election.

There are some Democratic towns which Gomez has won due to low turnout.

On the other hand, if Boston had a respectable turnout, Markey will win easily.

Massachusetts is my state. I live here and vote here. Voting has never been a problem for me and I don't stand in line more than 15 minutes. Voting in Massachusetts is efficient, IMO. Early voting doesn't solve the problem of disinterest and ignorance.

I'm from PA. I checked the returns, so far 55% - 45% in favor of Markey, 96% reporting. But what I found interesting was 2008 almost total blue. 2010 a lot of red, 2012 still a lot of red, 2013 a little less red but not by much (just observed, didn't count). Is Mass turning purple? Heaven forbid

Even if it was low turnout, Will...HE PULLED THROUGH! Dodged that bullet.

Thanks for heads up...interested to see how the vote tally went. I would expect that Dem turnout might be lower than 2010...but, if there was a good uptick at end...that would be hopeful going forward into 2014.

Although...by then I wonder if either party is going to get good numbers by then given the news coming out constatly.
