I think very highly of Nelson Mandela. His book "Long Walk to Freedom" is required reading for people of conscience.

A few years back, my telephone rang, waking me at about 3 am. It was Dr. Rubin Carter, calling; Mandela and Rubin were busy trying to assist in creating peaceful resoltion to the hatred and violence in the Middle East region.

Mandela wrote the foreword to Rubin's book "Eye of the Hurricane," which was published last year. I have a nice photograph of the two men greeting each other.

George W Bush signed the bill in time for the Nobel Peace Prize winner's 90th birthday on July 18. Ronald Reagan had originally placed the ANC on the list in the 1980s .

When a similar bill passed the House of Representatives last month, Barbara Lee, a California Democrat who co-sponsored it, said she was "especially pleased we are taking this important step to finally right this inexcusable wrong."

In April, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urged a Senate committee to remove the restrictions on the ANC party, calling it a "rather embarrassing matter that I still have to waive in my own counterpart, the foreign minister of South Africa, not to mention the great leader Nelson Mandela."

Prior to the removal of his name from the watch list Mr Mandela had to get special certification from the US secretary of state that he is not a terrorist in order to visit the country.

A remarkable human giant in an age of selfish cowards.

After 28 years in a wretched prison, I am happy he got to live a long life. He has earned that and more.

He literally defeated human evil.
