Greenwald discusses frenzied attempts to smear & discredit him since NSA stories began

The Personal Side of Taking on the NSA: Emerging Smears
Distractions about my past and personal life have emerged – an inevitable side
effect for those who challenge the US government by Glenn Greenwald
Published on Thursday, June 27, 2013 by The Guardian/UK

When I made the choice to report aggressively on top-secret NSA programs, I knew that I would inevitably be the target of all sorts of personal attacks and smears. You don't challenge the most powerful state on earth and expect to do so without being attacked. As a superb Guardian editorial noted today: "Those who leak official information will often be denounced, prosecuted or smeared. The more serious the leak, the fiercer the pursuit and the greater the punishment."

One of the greatest honors I've had in my years of writing about politics is the opportunity to work with and befriend my long-time political hero, Daniel Ellsberg. I never quite understood why the Nixon administration, in response to his release of the Pentagon Papers, would want to break into the office of Ellsberg's psychoanalyst and steal his files. That always seemed like a non sequitur to me: how would disclosing Ellsberg's most private thoughts and psychosexual assessments discredit the revelations of the Pentagon Papers?

When I asked Ellsberg about that several years ago, he explained that the state uses those tactics against anyone who dissents from or challenges it simply to distract from the revelations and personally smear the person with whatever they can find to make people uncomfortable with the disclosures.

So I've been fully expecting those kinds of attacks since I began my work on these NSA leaks. The recent journalist-led "debate" about whether I should be prosecuted for my reporting on these stories was precisely the sort of thing I knew was coming.

_____*_____*_____*_____*_____*_____*_____*_____*_____*_____*_____*_____*_____*_____*_____*_____*_____*_____*

In the remainder of the article, Mr. G goes into some detail about the most recent attempts to smear him for alleged "tax evasion" (IRS back payments actually) and for his "2002-04 participation in a multi-member LLC that had an interest in numerous businesses, including the distribution of adult videos" somehow related to hotel chains, all of which happened a decade ago.

I find it laughable that THIS IS ALL THEY COULD FIND to "discredit" Greenwald??

Also, it couldn't be clearer that this kind of aggressive smear campaign happens. Remember the demonization of Valarie Plame? Now it's Assange, Manning and Greenwald who are being demonized and smeared, for simply revealing some "inconvenient" truths to We The People.

However, the other elements HE focused on to try and damage the U.S. are works of someone trying to hurt America, and I will personally NOT tolerate that.

Giving secure information, and slamming the U.S. in the presence of our adversaries, China and Russia is a problem. It also demonstrates that his intent is to hurt the U.S., by giving aid to China and Russia against us.

If it was to prevent potential NSA abuses to Americans that is where the focus would have been, it wasn't, because he choose to focus it on all types of spying.

He would write a blog slamming the Bush Admin, and all these Bush supporters would come into the threads, after he had predicted their arrival. Lol, it got boring after a while, they were so predictable.

Anyhow, he's a great journalist and I'm happy that he has received so much support from the people who matter on the Left.

He has revealed more than he probably intended though, regarding some on the 'left' who appear to be willing to throw away our rights with the same abandon as their counterparts were prepared to do back in the bad old days when we had Bush to deal with.

I'm kinda surprised you've never heard of what sockpuppets are.

Viewing a site while not logged in would defeat the purpose of the puppet as it could not post the words you put in it's mouth, what you describe is closer to "lurking" which is not necessarily a negative thing, it just means observing.

FYI - the admins can spot a puppet just by comparing IP addys, it's not hard and if you are a sock, I suggest you just post under your actual login because if not they will find out about you and send you a message.

As for me, Ive first joined (Du2) in 2004 and was there briefly for the primary season. Computer died a few years later, and we changed ISP's. I decided to come back in 2008 for primary season again but didnt remember my login, email, or even my user ID. So I rejoined using my current email, under this user id. It is the only ID Ive logged in under since I rejoined in 2008. If you suspect me to have a sockpuppet, I invite you to alert the admins. I give them my full permission to put your suspicions to rest.

Anonymous. Very important topic which all Americans should be informed about. Were you around when they were exposed? When their proposal to smear Greenwald and a few others who were writing about the Bank of America and the Chamber of Commerce (remember them?) and hoping to get a contract for their 'work'.

We found out so much about how despicable these operatives are. They had to abandon that campaign after it was revealed that they actually get lots of money for this despicable 'work'. Dirty tricks it used to be called, but apparently it's big business now.

Greenwald was just a blogger back then but the BOA didn't take kindly to anyone revealing the corruption they were involved in. We cheered him on of course, being Liberal Democrats.

I am so glad he is writing about this. We'll never get it from the Corporate Media as they don't want the public to know how despicable they are.

Thu Jun 27, 2013, 05:36 PM
Jun 2013

began when HB Gary contractor, threatened to expose Anonymous, claiming he was that good at what he did. Lesson learned, don't ever threaten Anonymous or challenge them in any way. At the time Greenwald has been writing about the Chamber of Commerce and Bank of America.

Anonymous hacked into HB Gary's emails, thousands of them, and oh, what was learned about how our country works. Most people were shocked to see Greenwald's name as a 'target for a smear campaign' because of his writing about BOA and the Chamber of Commerce. He was just a blogger so it gave people some idea of the lengths they will go to to silence people.

After the exposure, HB Gary, at least that part of their operation, shut down. So the contract they were proposing against Greenwald was assumed to have gone nowhere. There were others targeted also, there were details about how they do it. Eg, find out if they have children, what schools they go to, what churches etc. Let them know 'we have photos of your kids, your wife etc'.

There was outrage, for a while. One Democrat launched a committee to look into the possible involvement of the FBI in all of this since they were implicated.

I couldn't possibly tell the whole story, but once you start looking I imagine you would be as shocked as most people were at the time.

The latest personal attacks on Greenwald appear to be the exact kind of material they described themselves looking for. But if that's all they got, and were paid the huge amounts these contractors get, they didn't earn their money, yet.

hopefully its a good place to start. http://www.forbes.com/sites/andygreenberg/2011/02/15/hbgary-execs-run-for-cover-as-hacking-scandal-escalates/

Obviously youve given me much information already. wow. I cant believe this happened in 2011 and I dont remember hearing anything about it. I know I was working a lot, but I didnt think Id missed *that* much.

How does the FBI get involved in something like this and never gets investigated? Ill admit theres a certain level of shady backroomedness (not a word) Ive always expected from the Govt. I guess thats why my point of view with this whole NSA thing is "yeah, I figured". But photos of your wife, kids, etc? Sounds more like the mob to me. I can tell Im going to be pretty pissed off by the time Ive done my homework here.

I had no idea you could hire someone just to ruin someone else. wow.

Thu Jun 27, 2013, 06:20 PM
Jun 2013

during the Bush years, especially when you kept reading the same 'talking points'. But I had no idea that there were corps, 'Spy Corps' who could be hired to do this kind of thing.

And yeah, the thing with the kids, that really got to people. It showed the lengths and the depravity and imo, actual danger posed by these people.

Here is a link you may not have found yet, from Salon I believe where some of the emails, re 'investigating the families' were published:

http://www.salon.com/2011/02/15/palantir/

I have completely changed my views about this country over the past several years. I agree that this stuff should have been thoroughly investigated. Those emails re people's children alone should have sparked as criminal investigation, but it was all ignored. A few Dems tried, Conyers and the W.V. Rep did demand an investigation by Congress, but it went nowhere.

This case was like watching a fantasy Spy Movie, except it was real and the 'good guys' didn't win, yet.

I mean Matt Taibbi has exposed to my mind far more damaging information and his reporting is just as good if not better.

I hope Scahill finds out who is behind this. We would all like to know.

I guess Greenwald hired HB Gary to attack Anonymous so they would reveal these plans so that he could 'get attention'. And maybe liberal writers like having their families smeared and threatened by scum like HB Gary. And the smear campaign continues.

Then why the big dust-up in the first place? Certainly Snowden
didn't manufacture the media frenzy over the disclosures, and
it wasn't him or Greenwald that "made a bid deal" out of the
massive NSA 100%-saturation spying, mining meta-data from
EVERYONE"S phone calls and emails to "narrow" the spying
down to actual individual people, who then become "suspects"
who find themselves suddenly being followed by suspicious
characters, thoroughly spied upon, including CONTENTS of
phone calls and/or emails".

What the public knew about the NSA's massive spying apparatus
(before Snowden) was very spotty at best, and included false claims
that NSA was "only spying on foreigners, not US citizens" phone
calls and emails.

"The NSA access is part of a previously undisclosed program called Prism, which allows officials to collect material including search history, the content of emails, file transfers and live chats, the document says.

The Guardian has verified the authenticity of the document, a 41-slide PowerPoint presentation – classified as top secret with no distribution to foreign allies – which was apparently used to train intelligence operatives on the capabilities of the program. The document claims "collection directly from the servers" of major US service providers."

"directly from the servers"

Which was denied by all the companies involved, and you know what would happen to Microsoft's expanding Cloud Based service offerings if business customers thought the NSA was able to get all their "stuff"...

People read too many spy novels. Do you have any idea of the number of packets that flow through the public internet in the United States alone? The NSA would need a couple 100 OC192 into every Tier1 and Tier2 internet provider alone.

I'm actually a happily retired community organizer, who
mostly worked with NGOs domestically to level the economic
playing field, get poor people into their own homes, my last major
gig was being hired to get 70 homeless people incorporated as
their own 501c3, that is democratically operated, with annual
elections of officers, etc.

These 70 became "members" of a membership based not-for-
profit, that the city (under quite a bit of duress and intense
public pressure) has leased land to, where they are building
a sustainable urban village of the poor, by the poor, for the
poor. It's called Dignity Village.

They/we started out as 8-10 pissed-off homeless people who
popped up some tents on city or ODOT land, determined to use
a chunk of public land on which to create a safe, sanitary place
to sleep at night. We played months of cat-and-mouse games
with the city, with them "evicting" them from one site, only to
have us call the press to announce a "shopping cart parade" to
the next (as yet undisclosed) publicly own site where they pop
up tents anew.

Now they are in their 13th year, and have built a village they
are proud of, because they are doing it for themselves, taking
care of one another; rather than having housed "poverty pimps"
dictate to them what is possible, what is real, etc.

You can check out the Village here, if you like ... there are many
great pics showing how it has developed over time. I'm very very
proud of the work I did with the Village and other poor people, to
help balance-out the gross injustices that our capitalistic greed-based
system visits upon those without wealth.

It's bad faith, period. The reporting is constantly full of more flattering "leaks" that are never characterized as "espionage" or traitorous, or "helping the enemy," but anything that tends to make the Pentagon or DOJ or the administration look bad is painted with all this ludicrous faux-patriotic verbiage about "our enemies."

That NY Daily News story, "Glenn Greenwald, journalist who helped Edward Snowden expose NSA spying, once was a lawyer who owed" was so lovingly quoted and rec'd by certain people at DU but it speaks says much more about deplorable thinking skills than it does about Greenwald.

The crayon-scribbler of that hit piece is Darah Gregorian, none other than the son of Vartan Gregorian, head of the Carnegie Corporation of New York. His questionable research skills and dishonesty have landed him in court several times, like the time he literally raped someone's facebook account and wrote "Gender Bend Shocker, Kinky Sex Suit Gal is a Man" for which he was sued.

It's laughable and extremely sad. I'm sticking to laughing and a wholesale dismissal of people who give any credibility to that kind of trash.
