US citizen killed identified as Jewish student Andrew Pochter

ALEXANDRIA, Egypt - An American college student stabbed to death during a protest in Egypt was in the country teaching English to children and improving his Arabic, according to a Facebook post on Saturday that appeared to be from his family.

According to the The Kenyon Collegian, the student newspaper, Pochter was active in Hillel, the campus’s center for Jewish life, and lived at the group’s on-campus house.

Andrew Pochter, 21, from Chevy Chase, Maryland, died after being stabbed in the chest in the coastal city of Alexandria, where anti-government protesters stormed an office of the ruling Muslim Brotherhood.

It was not clear what Pochter was doing at the protest, but Egyptian officials said he was carrying a small camera.

as a photojournalist and was apparently using a mobile phone to film an attack on a Muslim Brotherhood office. The mob then attacked him.

Some later news here :

The US has warned Americans not to travel to Egypt and has told non-emergency diplomatic staff to leave, as clashes continue in the country.

The state department also urged US nationals in Egypt "to remain alert".

The warning came as at least three people - including a US citizen - died in clashes between supporters and opponents of President Mohammed Morsi.

Tensions have been rising ahead of a mass rally planned by the opposition on Sunday to demand Mr Morsi steps down.

His supporters are stressing what they see as Mr Morsi's "legitimacy", rejecting the opposition's demand.

To the best of my knowledge Morsi was democratically elected implicit in which is that the majority of the population voted for him. The minority seem to have an issue dealing with that.

While it's not probable, it is still possible that he might have been comfortable enough in the country that he felt he wouldn't have to hide his religion, especially considering that Egypt is not at war with Israel. But who knows?

If he learned Hebrew, would that show up in his Arabic accent? Would he use the wrong word for something?

By the photos online, it is obvious that he is an American with his backpack and Nikon.

The person who stabbed him wouldn't necessarily be a stranger to him. Some extended community around the school would know who he was.
