Rachel's attorney asks some excellent questions about Zimmerman's statement.

Not in court, unfortunately. He's not part of the prosecution team.

http://blackamericaweb.com/142401/trayvon-martin-was-one-of-the-few-guys-who-didnt-tease-rachel-jeantel-rod-vereen/2/

And if you listen, okay, because as a defense attorney, and as a prosecutor, when you listen to the words that Zimmerman was saying on that audio tape, and on the video tape, he was trying to say every, you know, what we call, word, okay, hit word, that would be something that you would say, okay, this now authorizes him to use deadly force. He says Trayvon Martin says to him, you’re going to die today. No, no, no, no, no, you don’t go from running from somebody to why are you following me until oh, I’m going to kill you, you’re going to die today. Because you’re trying to say all these key words to say this is why I did it. Because he put this fear in my mind that he was going to kill me, or you’re going to die today. Oh, then he put his hands on his nose, I mean, his hands over my mouth and over my nose, again, because if he cuts off my breath I can die. Then it changes to he was pounding my head, okay, on the pavement. No concussions, no hematomans. I mean there’s too much lacking…

SYBIL WILKES : You know what? They need you on the prosecution.

ATTORNEY ROD VEREEN: You know what? I wish I could go to Jacksonville today and they swear me in right now because I would tell Mr. De La Rionda just let me do the closing argument. Okay? Because what’s lacking in this case is that they don’t have anyone to sit here and decipher for that audio tape for them, that video tape for them, and show them, you know, where the problem is with regard to Zimmerman’s statement. But here’s one of the main things I want people to realize.

Zimmerman said that he mounted Trayvon on his back. And that he stretched his hands out while he still had his gun in his hand when the other gentleman says, hey, I’m about to call the police and call 911. He says, no, don’t do that, help me with this guy. If that’s the case, and we we knew that Trayvon Martin was dead, why is it that when they found the body both of his arms were tucked up under him? Because Zimmerman is lying. Because Zimmerman is lying.

the prosecution is not bringing these things up. it's like they are just accepting too much of what Zimmerman said as fact. and then trying to argue from there when what Zimmerman says is questionable and some are outright proven lies.

when the prosecution takes all the evidence and connects the dots. The state laid out their case in the opening statement. If you felt you were justified in taking the life, that your life was in danger, why would you lie, embellish, exaggerate?

The local state attorney at the time decided not to charge Zimmerman. When public pressure kicked in, Gov. Scott appoint a Special Prosecutor, Angela Corey, to investigate. She decided there was sufficient evidence for prosecution but let de la Riconda (sp?) head the prosecution team.

commenting on the case, it seems most feel he'll walk. Just posted at another thread about this, but wanted to add it here too.

I did say I'm not watching as closely as some, but do check in and out. Wimbledon is going on right now and tennis is my very favorite sport so watching that a lot. My favorite just advanced to QF's and could very well win it all. He's done it before, so my nerves are getting frayed on 2 fronts!!

My husband is getting his foot operated on (tendon damage) and I've to take him to the surgery center at 6 AM.

I've learned never to count on a particular verdict. The jury is not hearing the same facts we are or have the ability to cross check them on the internet or outside source. They are only getting two very sculpted views of the totality of evidence. Even if we tried to only watch the trial footage, we still would not see the same things they do.

Tell him to do what Dr. tells him to. Feet are tricky. Had some work done before, easy to slip up after but finally healed well.

Not so lucky with my rotator cuff though, Sooooo painful and guess I overworked with rehab or something so will be having MRI next week to see what's up. Been hoping it was just a set back and thought it would clear up, but guess not! The pits for sure.

So hope all goes well, but be careful after. Sorry, didn't mean to but in, sure your Dr. will instruct you.

And yes, know they are sequestered, just really want some justice for TM. GZ is such a piece of work, not in a good way!!

Jul 2013

They had to repair a tendon and screw it back to the metatarsal. Six weeks non-weight bearing, no driving. That last is the hardest part. I've got severe carpal tunnel syndrome in my left hand so it goes to sleep if I hold the steering wheel with it. Last month I re-injured the right shoulder (that I had rotator cuff surgery on in 2009) so it hurts to reach out to hold the wheel. I only drive short distances any more, my husband is usually our long distance driver.

We've been going to the same orthopedic clinic since they totally rebuilt my left shoulder in 1993. They treat the athletes at FSU and FAMU and have some of the best surgeons in the SE. They're not in network for our current insurance but we don't care - we pay the difference. For me they've rebuilt the left shoulder, removed meniscus in both knees, right shoulder repair, replaced both knees, carpal tunnel and nerve relocation in the right hand and elbow, and they will do the work on my left hand once my husband can drive.

They know us so well they gave me one of their logo caps. And the nurse at the out patient surgery recognized us but was confused since we'd switched positions!

Thanks!

11. My, my... You Have Been Through The Mill...

Jul 2013

I was totally caught off guard about rotator cuff surgery. Didn't have a clue as to what was wrong. I wasn't given much time to even think about it. Had MRI, saw Dr., said come back in a week, we will do!

Now I broke my nose 3 times, had a miscarriage, hysterectomy, foot surgery and some other smaller surgeries, but NOTHING prepared me for the rotator cuff! Always handled pain very well. But that surgery was nothing like anything I ever experienced. Unbelievable pain, then went in the next day had bandages removed and therapy started! I'm right handed & it was my right shoulder. Dr. asked me how it happened and I didn't know. It just got worse over time, but thought it was tennis elbow. When I couldn't lift my arm I figured it was something else.

Turned out a lot had to be done. Won't go into all of it, and if you had reconstruction you KNOW already! But I have to admit I DO NOT WANT to find out I screwed it up again. How did you EVER deal with it?? And you have more!!! Holy cow! Can't wrap my mind around what you had to go through! It really, really hurt and I didn't sleep a wink after the numbness wore off because of the pain.

He's a great surgeon, he was the Red Sox's surgeon when they used to train here in the winter. My daughter & son-in-law are both in the medical field and my son-in-law knows him well. He did his foot surgery too. He has pictures of very famous sports figures all over his place. I'm told he's one of the best around here, but I still don't want to see him again.

You must be in Tally. My grandson goes to FSU. Go Noles!!

Well, GOOD LUCK AGAIN, but not being able to do things is the pits!

12. My left shoulder was definitely an experience I never want to repeat
Wed Jul 3, 2013, 08:35 PM
Jul 2013

I'd strained it when I slipped and fell while remodeling the bathroom. Then a few weeks later one of our colts reared and snatched it - I felt things pop inside. I couldn't lift my elbow more than a few degrees and it hurt like hell to try to sleep lying down. I had to sleep propped up so I used a recliner for months.

It happened on Halloween when we were out of town. What with holidays and such I kept delaying and didn't see my doctor until January. He sent me to the orthopedic clinic. That doctor tried and injection to reduce the inflammation and pain, didn't work. Then he sent me to physical therapy, after a month my PT sent me back to the doctor cause therapy was no good when the biceps wouldn't function.

Then the doctor sent me for an MRI which showed a little tearing, nothing serious. The doctor said 90 minute arthroscopic surgery, couple of little holes, sling for a couple of weeks, therapy for a month - I'd be good to go.

90 minutes after they wheeled me into the operating room, the surgeon came out and sat next to my husband, "This is going to take a little longer than we expected. We just finished inventorying the damage. It looks like a bomb went off inside the joint." 3 of the 7 ligaments of the rotator cuff were detached, 2 damaged. The cartilage inside the joint was shredded (I've seen the pictures, not pretty). They had to cut my shoulder open to reassemble it. Five hours later I was the last patient to leave the outpatient surgery.

My arm was immobilized for a month, six months of physical therapy. Oh yeah, we had no insurance so paid out of pocket. What hurt worse than all of that - I had to stop training my foals. I used to do all the imprinting, handling from birth, halter training, etc. My surgeon told me if that left shoulder is ever injured again, he can't fix it since scar tissue wouldn't heal properly. I miss wrestling my babies!

Yep, been in Tally since 1972. Came up for college, never left. I hope your grandson is doing great at FSU. What's his major?

17. AAAAH, My Grandson...
Wed Jul 3, 2013, 09:42 PM
Jul 2013

He just graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in International Affairs. BUT, was offered a teaching assistant slot so he didn't walk. He wants to earn his Masters and if he had walked he would have had to re-apply and pay extra tuition. So, it's back to school for him. He's into computer programming too. He & his first love broke up at the beginning of last year, was hard on both, but he said if he wants to really make something of himself he can't be tied down. Said it wouldn't be fair to either one of them. So, being a young male, he DOES see the girls and has his fun, but wants to be very careful.

Now this may not work, when you meet the one, well it's the one, but I do respect his attitude. His mother, my daughter got her Masters at almost the same time and she now practices cardiac medicine as an ARNP. So proud of both of them. Her husband is now studying for his masters in the medical field, but taking it slow. It's been tough financially for them, because my grand daughter just graduated from high school, but decided to go to Manatee Junior first. School, school, school. I keep saying please, please please let's get this country turned around.

Wow, that must have been tough with no ins. Thankfully, for THE UNION my husband had ins. from work, we have better insurance than many. Just waiting for the bomb to drop though. Have no proof it will, but I feel very "hinky" about everything that is going on these days.

Know about horses too and I know you really must miss them. My son has 3, but not his main job. I'm also an animal person, especially love my squirrels. Raised so many over the years, but know they have to be let go. Have 2 chocolate labs now, and boy are they spoiled!

Guess I'm lucky I had my surgery right away. Was told that mine gradually tore more & more horizontally, a cyst formed and calcium built up and some other ligaments involved. Stupid me, I felt if I could stand on my hands in a swimming pool to stretch my arm then flopping over like a back bend, it would go away. Did a lot of pool exercises to keep stretching. Who knew? But surgery was only about 2 hrs. I did do my therapy after, just decided all was well and started lifting heavy stuff. That's why I made the comment about doing what the Dr. says.

I grow lots of plants then have a sale each year and just started back with my plants. Have my fingers crossed the MRI will say it's bursitis, please??

I DO NOT envy you one bit, sounds like you've gone through the ringer. One thing I noticed recently because of what happened is NOW I'm afraid to do much of anything and I hate it. I'm not the prissy type. Guess you understand that too. Animals are so good for the soul.

So, we have a lot in common, but so far my husband is healthy!! What can I say but good luck to you again. You've been through a lot. It's just not fair sometimes!

Jul 2013

She got her Masters in International Affairs from George Washington University and now works for the International Red Cross. I think a lot more young people are getting into international studies.

I never had kids but I remember how difficult it was when my parents ended up paying or helping when my oldest sister was getting her post graduate degrees (she eventually got a doctorate), my older sister was working on her masters, I was in college and my little sister was starting early admittance.

Oh, I still have horses, but a nice family is managing the farm for me. Their son just graduated from farrier school and is getting his business started. He also wants to train so I'm hoping he'll stick around and work out of our farm.

It's so hard to not overdo! And my husband is feeling so good he wants to move around. Today he's trying my rollater walker and that seems to be working better. With the crutches, he kept trying to put his bad foot down and I don't want him to accidentally put weight on it.

I hope your shoulder is not serious. This isn't the time of year to not be able to keep up with managing plants!

Getting old SUCKS!

One is the prospect of travel, and the other is our crappy economy. As for your niece, very nice thought, but he IS trying hard not to have a serious relationship. It may be more of a wish than a reality though.

Glad your husband is doing well, but the urge to push may backfire, I'm sure you know. And yes, kind of down about my plants, so much rain and different plants require varying weather patterns.

I try not to think about my age, sometimes my brain wins, but then my body comes back and says... "knock-knock?" Oh why did I use that analogy, wasn't even thinking, LOL!

For professional reasons. Since she graduated (she's maybe ten years older than your grandson) she's made a lot of good contacts in the field. She wants to work for a NGO overseas but she is still living in DC. Her position with the International Red Cross is training people who are going to posts overseas so they know better what to expect. She's done a lot of traveling and some volunteer work in other countries so she's had a lot of exposure to different cultures.

I saw it earlier, but some friends from out of town were here. Then I posted on some other threads, which I replied back to.

I really like what you're saying and I'm sure my grandson would too. Small world we have going here with so much in common. What she's doing is what he's talked about. However, he has shown more interest in Asian countries. No sure how realistic that will be, but since he's still going to be going to school who knows what it will be like when he finishes.

I've been to D.C. quite a few times for protests and twice just as a tourist. My husband's political views are the same as mine, but I'm the one who's the activist. But he really enjoyed seeing the museums in D.C.

Was commenting at some other threads that were pretty depressing about which direction this country is going. Because I've always tried to stand up and have my voice heard, it's been very difficult to accept what's going on in the US. So, I do wonder if my grandson will be able to realize his dreams. It's worse than I've ever seen. And the apathy is overwhelming. I don't like saying it, but for me the cup is half empty now. And while getting older sucks, I wonder if being young isn't going to be worse.

Not only physically, but mentally I can't do it anymore. It seems I end up standing alone with just very few of us wanting to make changes.

Sorry, but things upset me and I worry. We've always been middle class, maybe not so much now because of what is going on in D.C. where nothing is getting done. Don't know how my kids & grand kids will fare. I would love for him and others to have opportunities that I had in the past.

Jul 2013

I don't have her work contact info, she doesn't stay in touch with me very much, but I think she's on Linked In so with her name he may be able to find her.

I don' know if things are worse than they were when I was in high school or college. Then we had Vietnam, worries about nuclear war, Nixon, etc. I remember discussions with fellow students about what we'd do if there was a serious threat of a nuclear war. One classmate had plans to move to New Zealand, on the idea he'd live longer there. I made the conscious decision I wouldn't want to survive if one came - I'd read too much science fiction about post-nuclear societies.

That's only one of the reasons I didn't have kids.

Because of Nixon, I was apolitical for a long time and refused to follow politics or to vote. Even once my husband convinced me to vote again, I was too busy with the farm and business to keep up with issues. It's only since 2001 I've gotten into it and about all the activism I've done is volunteer to work for some of the campaigns - all those operations kept me from doing more.

I used to be pessimistic, but I think we'll come through this period. Think of how depressed liberals were in 1972 when Nixon won. Things can't be that much worse today - we're just getting more of the inside news and keeping up better with the internet.

23. I Can't Disagree About How So Much More News
Sun Jul 7, 2013, 01:36 PM
Jul 2013

that's everywhere and at your finger tips. I remember Nixon and so much else. I remember the upheaval and fear going on. I remember Viet Nam very well, but "we the people" went out, protested and seemed to have made a difference. Because we rose up in protest, it seems to me that elected officials saw and felt the protests to be valid.

We were told that we would NEVER have another war (non-war) like Viet Nam. Now, we just jump in without Congress even voting on it. I was astounded how readily the invasion of Iraq was accepted and how if a person didn't agree you were considered unpatriotic. Patriotism = War and it was like the return of the soldiers after WWII.

So, if polls are to be accepted, most Americans don't seem to want us to get involved in another war, but I doubt those in D.C. even care.

In the 70's money was falling out of the skies and there was more opportunity for the middle class. There were jobs with unions or just jobs that you could make a living with. Now so many jobs are shipped overseas. We manufacture very little, export very little and live on imports made in countries where workers are paid a pittance. Banks, big corporations, big pharma, health care and so much more are entities that seem to be holding all the cards. And most important of all, people feel more and more helpless. I've tried to get people involved, most just tell me it doesn't matter. Voter suppression is gaining steam, and many people tell me that they find voting useless.

Anyway, it would be nice if you did PM me. I would like that. I am glad to see others have optimism and I wish more than anything that in reality "we shall overcome!"
