Drumming up a phony war on religion

Seriously? Are we really going to pretend that Christianity is somehow under siege? That the Almighty would have been any more offended Sunday than he was, say, in 2006, when Madonna — who could sue Minaj for theft of intellectual property — performed a song during her touring act while being mock-crucified on a mirrored cross? While wearing a crown of thorns? Even at her show in Rome?

The “war on religion” alarmists are just like Minaj and Madonna in one key respect: Lacking a coherent point to make, they go for shock value.

Among the loudest voices, predictably, are those of the Republican presidential candidates. Guess who’s to blame for the attack on all God-fearing Americans who go to church every Sunday to hear sermons about the sacrifice and triumph of Jesus Christ. Hint: He got in trouble four years ago, during his presidential campaign, for going to church every Sunday to hear sermons about the sacrifice and triumph of Jesus Christ.

President Obama is indeed waging a war on religion, Mitt Romney claimed last week at the Conservative Political Action Conference. Romney promised to rescind every “Obama regulation” that somehow “attacks our religious liberty.”

iow, it's the Republican Primary and Republicans claim the religious are being attacked - some nutters, like Santorum, may believe it. Romney, of course, believes it's true for the corporate people who live in his magic underpants.

The irony - or rather, not irony - it's the Republican Primary - is that legislation at this time is focused on regulating women's naughty bits - the conventioneers need their religio-porn to go with the rest of the swill.

putative athiests (who could indeed be trolls trying to make atheists look bad), some of the rest of it serious as shit stuff about how tax exemptions for churches amount to the state establishing religious dogma ("Pro-Life" anti-LGBTQ marriage). Seeing some calls for religious taxation.

IMHO, it may be that winning isn't the RNCs only main priority at this time; pulling a rock hard fired-brick utterly reliable voting base out of this insanity is at least as important as winning, because their survival as a party depends upon it and people like Santorum with Palin in the wings are the voting-block sheep-herders.

I think religious institutions are businesses and should be taxed like any other - and given exemptions for actual charity work. I don't think they deserve exemption b/c of their beliefs. There's no reason for the govt. to decide what is and isn't a religion by providing a tax exemption for some of them and excluding others.

that Republican rock hard base has been there for decades. They're the same ones who supported Bush until the bitter end. 20-30% of this nation seems to be comprised of religious zealots who have no other way of coming into power unless they form an alliance with the greediest motherfuckers in this nation.

they continue to alienate the majority of Americans. Any fiscal conservative who continues to align with them is an idiot - worse than an idiot. (see above)
