Justice Minister Grete Faremo has halted attempts to get the Norwegian government to reconsider an asylum request from Edward Snowden, the young American who has revealed massive surveillance and spying by the US government. Even though some view Snowden as a hero and political refugee, Norway clearly wont jeopardize its relationship with the US by granting him safe haven.
Norway has been among the many countries where Snowden sought asylum, but his request was quickly turned down on a technicality by immigration agency UDI. The immigration authorities contended that asylum seekers must be physically present in Norway when they apply, while Snowden reportedly remains stuck in a transit zone at the Moscow airport after the US cancelled his passport. That meant he didnt meet Norways formal application requirements.
A Norwegian organization that advocates freedom of expression, Norsk PEN, then took the initiative to bring Snowden to Norway as a sort of transfer refugee. UDI then responded that Snowden didnt qualify for that status, either. Faremo now seems to have brought further attempts at aiding Snowden to an end.
In a press release issued by the justice ministry on Thursday, Faremo noted that the US wants Snowden extradited to face criminal charges regarding his release of secret documents. He thus has no right to asylum, she wrote, because hes a fugitive from a democratic country with a criminal justice system like that found in the US.

(40,416 posts)Norway and Iceland have close cultural ties, although Iceland is fairly fiercely independent.
But there is pretty much zero chance that Iceland grants Snowden citizenship without him being first legally on Icelandic soil.
For better or worse, Snowden isn't going to win on this.

the bill to grant Snowden citizenship received limited support Thursday. Six members of minority parties were in favor out of Parliament's 63 members.

(Reuters) - Italy cannot support an asylum request from fugitive former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden, Foreign Minister Emma Bonino said on Thursday.
Speaking in parliament, she said that any asylum request would have to be presented in person at the border or in Italian territory which Snowden, currently believed to be in a Russian airport transit lounge, had not done.
"As a result there do not exist the legal conditions to accept such a request which in the government's view would not be acceptable on a political level either," she said.

France has rejected an asylum request from National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, the interior ministry says. Snowden has requested asylum in 21 nations after leaking intelligence on US surveillance programmes.
France said on Thursday it was rejecting a request for asylum from fugitive US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden.
"Like many countries, France received a request for asylum from Mr. Edward Snowden through its embassy in Moscow. Given the legal analysis and the situation of the interested party, France will not agree," the interior ministry said in a statement.
