Scientists use gene sequencing to ‘select’ a healthy baby boy

Scientists said Monday they had used a new-generation gene sequencing technique to select a viable embryo for in-vitro fertilization (IVF) that yielded a healthy baby boy.

IVF, the process whereby a human egg is fertilised with sperm in the laboratory, is a hit-and-miss affair, with only about 30 percent of fertilised embryos resulting in pregnancy after implantation.

The reason for the high failure rate is not clear but genetic defects are the prime suspects, according to the authors of the paper presented Monday at a meeting in London of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE).

The new method, known as next generation sequencing or NGS, uses updated technology to sequence an entire genome — revealing inherited genetic disorders, chromosome abnormalities and mutations.

Study author Dagan Wells of the University of Oxford’s NIHR Biomedical Research Centre said the new technology was “inherently cheaper” and yielded more genetic data than older methods.

It provides millions of fragments of DNA from a single cell which are then sequenced by a computer.

(Interesting potentials--- Could traits traits are regulated? Banned outright? Or mandated?

Are Bottle births only - no women required a possibility?

From a dystopian standpoint...how about a State that replicates its own polite, calm, tractable, ignorant citizenry, independent of human errors unwanted by the State. )

Gattaca was written around the idea that your genetic history would become public knowledge, and that those with "imperfect" genetics would find themselves isolated within society. It was about the struggle of one man to overcome his genetics and prove that he was just as capable as the genetically perfect.

This technology has more in common with the eugenics movements of the last century. The threat here isn't so much ostracism, but the specter of a future in which our naturally bred children and grandchildren with genetic abnormalities find themselves a smaller and smaller segment of society. Keep in mind that the majority of children are already genetically perfect and are created the old fashioned way. Genetically filtered children will have no inherent advantages over humans who achieved that genetic perfection in the bedroom instead of the laboratory.

I don't really have a problem with selecting out embryos with genetic abnormalities, so long as that kind of genetic testing remains private and isn't available to employers, insurers, or other people. That would reduce disability and disease, while avoiding the whole Gattaca scenario.

Yes, it could be used wisely to remove genetic diseases like muscular dystrophy, Huntington's chorea and Tay-Sachs from the genome within a few generations, at least in the first world.

However, it can potentially be used by eugenics nuts to favor qualities, usually appearance related, that they approve of.

Wonder if the Chinese would embrace the eugenics aspect.

Let's say an overtly totalitarian society does embrace it. Do we suddenly find ourselves in a Eugenics race?
