I have done *a lot* of boating on rivers and lakes and I have no idea how they managed that. That was routine for commerce before steam boats.
There is a reproduction keelboat in St. Louis at "the Arch" that I have yet to see .

of Lewis and Clark?
It's fantastic. My students love it.

And yes, Stephen Ambrose plays a large part in the narrative. He sadly departed us in 2002.
