Campus bans sale of disposable water bottles

A new campus rule will have Western Washington University students scrambling to stores to purchase canteens and Camelbacks.

Beginning this fall, Western is banning the sale of all disposable water bottles from campus markets and vending machines.

Western will officially begin phasing out bottled water as soon as possible, said Carolyn Bowie, co-president of Students for Sustainable Water.

The ban of all disposable water bottles could be enforced as soon as this fall. However, a date is not definitively set for the water bottle ban because of challenges Western may face, such as getting water removed from campus vending machines, she said.

Western could lose $60,000 from the cold beverage contract with Pepsi if cold beverage sales significantly decrease, Robby Eckroth, the vice president of Associated Students for Student Life said in an email.

I like the Klean Kanteens myself.

Save money, don't pay for tap water in a shitty plastic bottle.

I collect the bottles and bring them to a reclaim operation. At home, I drink from the tap or from a glass filled with water from a gallon jug that I keep in my fridge and refill when it is near empty.

Lite flavorless vitamin water. They can just as a little vitamin C or something.

control of plastic waste. The university would have been better advised to install waste containers for plastic bottles around campus, empty those containers daily and take the plastic to a reclamation plant.
